Just back from Victory Cruise

Just got home from our 2/24 Victory cruise to the Western Caribbean. Embarkment and Disembarkment were the easiest and quickest of any cruise we've ever done !:) We stayed at the Holiday Inn Port of Miami for two nights precruise and would gladly stay there again. Took a taxi ($10) and arrived at the terminal about 10:45 and less than 10 minutes later were sitting comfortably waiting to board. We were suppose to set sail at 4 pm but didn't leave until after 6 pm. Our wait staff told us it was because the cruise before us had consumed so much food that they needed to get more supplies than normal and had to wait for them to be delivered before we could set sail. Another thing that Carnival did right on this cruise was the Life Boat drill- very quick and painless ! We decided to self-assist for disembarkment and that worked great. We could have left about 7:15 am but chose to wait until about 8:15 am and got an elevator quickly and were through customs and out the door in about 15 minutes.

Some don't care for the decor of the Victory but we enjoyed the "old Vegas" style of decoration, not to mention that green is my favorite color !;) Somehow we managed to NOT get bitten once all week by the seahorses which is a good thing ! We found our way around the Victory easily and the only place that it occasionally felt crowded was on Lido but even then it wasn't bad.

The dining room food each evening was good and while we did enjoy it, nothing stood out as outstanding except maybe the chocolate melting cake ! Our waitstaff Oscar and Imade were outstanding and we had a great time with them. We had requested to share a table but were given a table for two which turned out ok as we conversed throughout each dinner with two couples sitting at a table next to us. I was happy when Oscar presented us with the Victory pictures on Friday night which he signed for us. We observed that there was a wide variety of dress each night for dinner including formal night. For those that keep track, yes, shorts were allowed in the dining room including formal night.

We found the food on Lido ranged from simply ok to actually pretty good. We saw long lines but we never had to actually stand in any of them for more than a couple of minutes. We found the regular buffet to be simply ok so didn't eat there often. To my suprise I liked the pizza. The ice cream was great. DH enjoyed the nacho chips and burgers and onion rings.

We attended Tea the first sea day as we had enjoyed Tea on Princess last summer. Lets just say we didn't find a reason to go again another day.

The chair hogs were out in full force on this cruise every day but if you wandered around on the higher decks one could usually find a couple chairs to lounge on during the day. I wasn't looking forward to the big screen TV but it was ok. Occasionally it was a bit too loud and seeing the same cruise clips played over and over was overplay but for the most part it was alright.

There were quite a few children on this cruise but for the most part they were well behaved. It was a bit disturbing one day to see a barely 3 year old wandering around the Siren Pool/Bar area alone for a while, which when pointed out to security quickly took over looking after him while looking for his parents. After probably another 10 minutes his mother casually showed up looking for him as she'd realized she hadn't seen him in a while up on sky deck and then she couldn't understand why the security person was telling her she had to keep a better eye on her son.

For as much alcohol as seemed to be being consumed throughout the week the only "drunks" we witnessed were those last passengers trying to walk back down the dock to the ship in Cozumel- believe me, that is worth watching !!!;)

With the exception of the last nights "Living in America" show in the Caribbean Lounge, which was great , the other evenings entertainment in that venue was simply ok at best and mostly ho-hum. We had a great time with Bob Styles at the Piano Bar a few different nights and we found some of the other musicians in different venues enjoyable to listen to throughout the evening. The slots in the casino were some of the tightest I've ever played. I did manage to make it to the finals in the first slot tournament- which was a lot of fun even though I didn't manage to win.

We enjoyed our balcony room 9287 on Lido deck. A great location, quiet, lots of storage. Our room staff was also good and we loved his towel animals. People have asked about the hair dryer and I found it to work just fine. While its not terribly powerful it did the job. No need to bring a power strip as there were two plugs in the room and one in the bathroom. We never had to ask for our ice bucket to be filled as our staff kept it filled at all times for us.

In Cozumel we docked at Punta Logusta (did I spell that right ?) and we took a taxi ($15) to Paradise Beach and had a great day !! :) If we go to Cozumel again we will definately go back to Paradise Beach. We shopped a bit before going back to the ship.

A cold front came through Wednesday night and at 6 am I doubted we would be stopping at Grand Cayman as the water was pretty ruff but the Captain managed to go to Spots Bay on another side of the island and we were able to tender from there. Most of the water excursions were cancelled for the day :( so we didn't get to swim with the stingray or visit Rum Point Beach so we took a taxi to 7 Mile Beach but didnt stay long as it was windy and started sprinkling so we wandered back into town to do a little shopping and then caught a taxi back to the ship.

We loved our stop in Jamacia. We did an excursion to Dunn's River Falls and Coyaba Gardens. The gardens aren't large but are very pretty and Dunn's River Falls is worth seeing even if you don't climb the falls. I'd read much about the venders in Jamacia being agressive in attempting to sell you things. Our experience was that yes, they are more aggressive then in many ports but we found it no problem to just keep walking if we weren't interested in talking or looking, but many times we did stop and talk and found them to be very pleasant and polite with great senses of humor. Two or three different men approached my DH to start up a conversation and inquire if he was interested in purchasing some drugs but all he had to say was "no way" and they smiled and we continued on our way. Visiting and shopping in Jamacia was without a doubt one of our most pleasant experiences on our trip. :)

A cruise is what you make of it and we had an enjoyable cruise. It wasn't one of those "WOW" cruises as our list of "greats" is slim but on the other hand our list of complaints only consist of petty things so all in all that's not bad ! Whoo Hoo !

If you"ve got any questions just ask and I'll try to answer.

Thank you so much for the review. We are looking forward to the same cruise in April. Your review is the 1st I have heard mention of Bob Style in the piano bar. I have never had a good piano player on a cruise and was hoping this would be a first. Glad you liked him. Did he interact and try to get the audience participating or did he just play for the entertainment? Hoping for a lively piano bar.

We are planning on the rays and rum excursion too. Hate you didn't get to do it. Also planning on Paradise Beach but want to do the shopping 1st then the beach. Where did you do your shopping? Is there much shopping at the pier or is it better to go somewhere else?

Sorry for all the ??????? but thanks for your help.....

Thank you so much for the review... So little has been written about the Victory. I'm so glad to see that the seahorses didn't get you :)

Who was the Capt and is the Cruise Director Malcolm and how did he do?

Did you have a Meet n Greet and, if yes, where and when and how did it turn out?

What movies/concerts did they show on the big screen?

Also, what Ports did you tender or dock at?

Is there anything special we should definitely do/see or something we really don't even need to bother with?

Great job u did and thank you again... Glad you had a good time...

Thanks for a great review. We will be on Victory 3/30-Eastern Caribbean. What did you do in Miami?

The Holiday Inn Port of Miami is across the street from Bayside Market where the first night we ate dinner ouside, walked around and enjoyed the music. On Saturday we walked a few street down to Flagler Street where we found two drug stores and purchased a 12 pack of Pepsi and some ginger tablet to take on the cruise with us and then wandered around some of the other stores. There is also a liquor store there. We spent the next few hours sunbathing and swimming in the pool at the hotel. Later in the afternoon we went back to Bayside Market and went on an hour and a half boat tour around Miami and then had dinner outside again and watched the outside concert.

Just inside the Bayside Market area is a tour booth that offers a variety of tours for the area. Several people we talked to went on some of these tours and they all reported having had a good time.

Enjoy your cruise on the Victory !

Who was the Capt and is the Cruise Director Malcolm and how did he do?

The Capt is Gianpaolo Casula and he attended both the Captain's Cocktail Party and the Past Guest Party. We also saw him walking around the ship and stopped and spoke to him one evening.

Malcolm Burn is the cruise director. Its a new position for him since September and we thought he did a good job. I suspect he is growing in his job each week. You will hear WHOO Hoo a lot from him !! :) He did mention Cruise Critics in his Welcome Show on Sunday night so he is very aware that we're here. His Fun Ship staff has a lot of energy and are fun to watch do their jobs.

Did you have a Meet n Greet and, if yes, where and when and how did it turn out?

WE had a meet and greet scheduled for Monday afternoon but no one showed up :( There is so much to do that I think time just gets away from you !

What movies/concerts did they show on the big screen?

The Wendall Baker Story, HIgh School Musical 2, Ray Charles Concert, Evan Almighty, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phenix, Ratatoulle, Transformers were the shows/movies listed in the Capers

Also, what Ports did you tender or dock at?

We docked at Comumel and Ocho Rios, Jamaica and tendered at Spots Bay Grand Cayman.

Is there anything special we should definitely do/see or something we really don't even need to bother with?

This is a hard questions as everyone's taste and perferences are different. If the big screen TV is important to you or being where you can see some of the deck activities from a lounge chair are important than you will need to be on Lido deck early in the morning to get lounge chairs to see the screen as they were all "saved" or being used long before 9 a.m. on sea days.

Walk around the different food venues on Lido to see what there is. We heard many people saying on the last days that they didn't realize what different options were available.

Bob Styles playing sing-a-long piano music in the Irish Pub is a lot of fun. The Deck party on Tuesday night was fun to watch and join in the dancing.

The "Living in America" show is a must see IMO. The other shows are ok, just not all that great IMO so if you don't get to them you haven't missed a great deal.

We enjoyed Tea in the afternoon on Princess as their pastries and finger sandwiches were wonderful but not all that great on the Victory.

I'd suggest getting your pictures taken early and then check them out the next day to see if you're interested in purchasing any. Waiting to actually purchase any until the last day can turn into a major problem in trying to find them because they move them often and we heard MANY people complaining loudly on the last days as they couldn't find them and with lots of people looking the space is limited and very crowded.

Enjoy your trip !!!

Thanks it was great to read!!!! i will be on 3/30 and can't wait to cruise.

How was the night life on the cruise???

The night life appeared very active on our cruise. We usually retired to our cabin around 12:30 am but there were still lots of people out and about in the different bars, casino and public areas on the Prominade deck and on Lido when activities were still going on there.

I too just returned from that same cruise. I think Grandmato4 gave a excellent review of the cruise and would agree with her about most of the shows also. I really have no complaints about any one part of the entire cruise for me, I was a tad bit sorry to see the weather was not what I was hoping for in Cayman Islands but we still went to the seven mile beach and stayed for quite a bit and my daughters seemed to have fun in the water with such big waves. Climbing the Falls in Jamaica is a must for anyone who is thinking about it, the guides really make it fun!

I would like to take the time to let the passenger who became critically ill that my thoughts and prayers continue to go out to them and their family.

No, Bob didn't just play and sing for entertainment. He worked at getting the audience participation and usually had great results but of coarse that depends on who is there. His occasional "costumes" were always a hit with the audience- Elvis was one of my favorites ! I think you will have found your first good piano bar player !

Our weather for Grand Cayman was a disappointment but nothing that can be controlled and it could have been worse as we could have skipped the port all together ! We chose to look at it as a reason to go back again :)

You'll love Paradise Beach. I can't remember if we had 5 or 6 ships in port that day but the only time the beach chairs appeared to be mostly filled was between 12 and 1 - other than that we saw empty lounges waiting to be used. It never seemed crowed. Cozumel time was one hour behind the ships time so many of the stores weren't opened yet when we docked in Cozumel so if you plan to shop first you'll want to take that into account as to how that might effect your cruise as there maybe no need to rush off the ship to shop. When we had our taxi drop us back in town after leaving Paradise beach we walked down the main street and took some of the side streets to window shop and wander into to look around and shop. When you get off the ship and walk down the dock if you dock at Punta Logusta (still don't know if I'm spelling that right?) they will attempt to send you up a flight of escolators which takes you through the shopping center there- you can avoid that center if you wish by going to the left at the end of the dock which takes you straight to the main street.

Enjoy your cruise !!

funatsea01- Sorry we didn't get to meet on board. And glad to hear that your family also had a good cruise!

For those you not traveling with us-the Capt rushed us to Grand Caymen Wed evening in order to tender off a passenger that became serious ill earlier Wednesday. I spoke to the friends that were traveling with the gentleman who became sick and his wife. It was an elderly gentleman from NJ that had come down with cold like symtoms and then was having serious heart problems. He was doing much better on Thursday. His friends reported that the crew of the Victory had been absolutely wonderful to the gentleman and especially to his wife who was very scared and upset. A representative from the Victory had been sent into Grand Cayman with them to take care of everything and anything that the passenger and his wife needed.

Was there a fee to get into Paradise Beach? I will be on a different ship but we will be going to Cozumel. Loved your review:D

No fee to get into Paradise Beach. They do hope that you spend a minimum of $10 pp on food and/or drink. For $10 pp you can purchase a bracelet that allows you unlimited use of the water toys. Its a beautiful beach area with lots of lounge chairs and umbrellas. Nice bathrooms, lockers, a small shopping store, hair braiding, massages, other toys you can purchase like a banana boat ride, wave runners, parasailing, ect. Free internet access for I think it was 10 or 15 minutes at the bar. The drinks were great and while we didn't purchase any the food looked very good and plentiful. Plenty of taxis waiting outside to return you to town or the pier. We really enjoyed our time there.

How was the ship itself? We went on it a few years back and it was getting somewhat dated and needed a facelift. I heard it got one in the summer 07. We'll be going on it for a southern Caribbean in Jan 09.

How was the lido deck? I spend a lot of time there.

What great info that has been provided by grandmato4. MUCH appreciated!!

Can you tell me the names of the bands that played on the Lido Deck and/or in any of the lounges.

Glad to see Captain Casula was still on the Victory. We sailed with him on the Destiny and the Victory. Got to meet him one night in the Ionian Lounge. What a gentleman. Hope he's still there in May when we sail.

The Victory isn't one of the newer ships so there is a bit of age showing but we thought it looked pretty good ! I guess if we were picky about such things we might feel a bit differently- there was a bit of rust around the bottom of the deck on our balcony by the door and under the window but nothing that bothered us as I only noticed because I knew someone would ask this question ;) and there was a chip in our bathroom sink but again nothing that bothered us. The public areas looked good-although my DH was bothered by the light bulbs in the chandiler in the Caribbean Lounge that need to be replaced (can you tell he works in maintenance ?) but it gave us something to joke about each time we were in that lounge.

The ouside Lido deck itself looked good. The Mediteranian Resturant area reminded us very much of "Old Vegas" and while the booth chairs were in good condition replacing the fabric probably would be a good idea.

We knew ahead of time that we weren't sailing on a brand new ship and so I think I'd have to say that the Victory met our expectations as far as overall condition.

Yes Capt Casula is very much a gentleman and I hope he will still be there for you in May.

Tidal Wave played on Lido. They were ok but nothing great. The piano player in the Atrium was Bobbi- I play piano and was not impressed with her playing. The Empire Trio played classical musical and were ok. Live Jazz was Opus Duo in the Ionian Lounge and they were very good musicians. Music on the Prominade was Flashy and he was very good. Shurland was the DJ and we only heard him a few times but he seemed to be ok. Bob Styles was the piano bar player and he was very enjoyable to listen to and sing-a-long with.

Enjoy your cruise !

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions and everybody else’s too for that matter. I am not going to nitpick the ship for some cosmetic flaws. I’ve been on several cruises since the mid 90’s and to be honest, most of the ships start to look somewhat the same as far as the décor goes after a couple of days anyway. I look for a good price and itinerary first and worry about the ship itself second. I’ll hop on one of their newest ships for my next cruise but for the time that we’re going in the Southern Caribbean, this was pretty much what we had to choose from. Six islands in a week works for me!

I keep reading about the seahorses that like to 'bite' people. I am guessing they are statues that people tend to walk into A LOT and get hurt. My DD & I will be sailing on the Victory in June and I would like to know where the seahorses are located so that we can steer clear of them. We both have a tendency to walk into inanimate objects that don't 'give'.

Thanks,

I think you'll be pleased with the Victory for your six islands in a week cruise ! I agree, we pick itinary and good price first and look at the ship last. Have a great cruise !
