Balcony and small children...safe?

I am new to cruising. I have been very excited planning our first cruise. My Husband and I are "mature" lol, but our children are young, 2 and 4 years old.

I decided on the Carnival Pride in June with a Balcony stateroom so that I could have a view while stuck in the room for naps or early bedtime. That is until I woke from a nightmare where one of my children climbed over the balcony.

I then investigated Oceanview, but they are only on the Riviera deck, which is the lowest deck directly under all the activity. I am worried about noise and the little ones sleeping.

Any words of wisdom about Balcony safety Vs Riviera level and small children?

Everytime I call Carnival with a question, they keep telling me I better book quick or there won't be room......arrgh, I am getting anxious.

Thank you so much,

Kim

The balcony rail is 45" and also there is a lock on the door to the balcony you can always use.

I wouldn't worry....your not going to let them run around on their own and look at the height of the deadbolt on the door.....shouldn't be a problem.

my son was a BIG 6 year old on the Triumph 2 years ago(he's off the charts on size for a kid his age)........the rail wasn't anything to worry about unless you let the kids slide chairs to the rail and climb up and jump around

We've been on 2 cruises with an under 6 year old, and I wouldn't hesitate getting a balcony cabin. We were on an aft cabin on the Valor and an extended side balcony on the Miracle. We set ground rules..no going on the balcony without one of us. No climbing on the table or chairs.

He loved the aft balcony because the glass rail is sloped and he could sit "under" it.

Also, at 6 he was really struggling to open the door. They have a fair amount of resistance.

Take 'em, enjoy the trip.

Our youngest was 4 the first time we cruised - and I put all 5 of us in a balcony cabin (Victory, which allows 5 in a cabin). We liked having the balcony just so we had an "escape" - it was great having a place we could call our own while the younger two sons went to bed early, or during the afternoon when Camp Carnival closes prior to dinner. Even now, I don't allow either of the two younger sons to be on the balcony by themselves (and youngest is 8, middle son turns 12 on Wednesday). But as long as you use the deadbolt on the door when you're not using the balcony, I think you'll be fine.

We cruised in 2006 with a 3 and 6 year old. We never had any problem whatsoever. They knew that they were not allowed to stand on chairs or the table on the balcony. It was also a wonderful place to read at night while they slept, and DH went out with his brother to the comedians or casino. I still felt like I was on vacation, not just stuck in some crappy room with sleeping children having a pitty party. We opened our divider then they could go back and forth between cabins without having to get out in the hall!!:) :)

I am so relieved to hear about the deadbolt that is out of the kids reach. I would certainly never let my kids climb on the furniture or be out there by themselves, but they are 2 and 4 and I needed to know I had a fool proof way of keeping them off the balcony.

Thank you for your quick and informative responses. You guys are so knowledgeable I think in future I will skip calling Carnival with my questions and just ask you! :)

Also, I have arthritis in my hands and I have trouble with the sliding bolt. I hope I am stronger than a small child. Ha-Ha!

Another thing is when that door is opend at night you do hear the big woosh and the wind.
