Have you stayed in Santo Domingo?

Looking for a good place to stay 2 nights, pre cruise.

Will be flying in to SDQ.

How far do the RCI ships dock ... from SDQ ?

Is there a recommended area to stay?

I would love to hear all of your Santo Domingo comments.

Thanks !

we stayed at the Intercontinental. It was very nice and food was great (but expensive). The hotel is a short 5 to 7 minute drive depending on traffic. You can see the ship come in right in front of your hotel. AS you look out from your balcony there is a walk that runs along the ocean, a little dirty, but beautiful view. The first restaraunt you come to on your left was wonderful. We had breakfast on Saturday morning $10 for both my wife and I. Food was great. There is a great place to sit outside. enjoy.

We stayed at the Renaissance Jaragua in Santo Domingo for two nights prior to our cruise on Legend of the Seas. It is one of the hotels that RCI offers for pre or post cruise stays, but we booked on our own through the Marriott website and paid significantly less than what RCI was charging even if you factor in the cost of transfers from airport to the hotel, hotel to the ship, and ship back to the airport. The hotel is right on the water and was quite comfortable. We were in the tower building but one couple was housed in the low rise building and a bit of a distance from the lobby, restaurants etc. Not impressed with the casino but everything else was fine and the staff was very accommodating. The concierge helped our group of 13 arrange a day long tour that took us to the Colonial Zone, Columbus Lighthouse, and the beach at Boca Chica in a comfortable air-conditioned van for $50 pp. We were gone from about 10:30 in the morning until about 5pm and could have stayed out longer if we had wished.

The ride from the airport to the hotel took about half an hour and the transfer to the pier is only about ten minutes. Dominican Airport Transfers provided our transfers from airport to hotel to pier and back to the airport and were always on time and friendly and efficient.

The cruise terminal is new and we arrived at the pier around 10:45. Check in began at around 11am and my wife and I were the first guests to board at 11:15. There is a $10pp fee (payable at the airport) for a tourist card if you are staying in Santo Domingo before your cruise and a $20 pp departure tax (payable at the pier). If those fees go to build and maintain the airport and seaport facilities they are monies well spent as both facilities were very modern and efficient.

We loved our cruise on Legend in February and our only regret was that we didn't book both itineraries and do a back to back.:)

Does anyone know if this tax must be paid twice? Once when you depart from the port to go on the cruise and again when you depart from the airport to go back to the States? I ask because I see it in the itemized list of taxes and fees for my plane tickets.

It depends on how long you stay.

We flew in the night before, paid the 10 dollars and that was it.

no 20 at the port and no 10 to transfer to the airport post cruise.

Also, we stayed at the hilton. It was very nice. About a 35 minute cab ride from SDQ and aobut 10 minutes from the port.

I hope someone can answer this question: Is it safe to use the same time frame standard when leaving the cruise ship for getting to the airport? Is it totally safe to book a 12:15 flight? Any help would be appreciated!

Cruise Ship port to Las Americas Airport takes about 30-45 minutes depending on traffic. Be prepared for some lines at the airport if you are traveling coach and minimum to medium line if traveling first or business class. There are no automatic ticketing stations at Las Americas.
