What is safe, La Romana?

Hi we are going to La Romana in November on the Carnival Splendor. I have read alot of negatives regarding the safety in D.R. This will be our honeymoon so I want to be able to do something at every port of call, what would you suggest is the best thing to do in La Romana? Thanks in advance.

We were on Carnival Destiny in Feb. We did the ship's Catalina Island Beach excursion. The beach was stunning ... just a great place to swim, sun, etc. There are some vendors, hair braiding, massage, etc. If I had not done this excursion, we thought of the Bayahibe Beach break ... but I am glad we did this one.
