Tintown Posted March 19, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 19, 2008 We will be staying at the Corus Hotel, Lancaster Gate, near Hyde Park, London and need to get to Southhampton, along with all our luggage. We had thought possibly by train - does anyone know how easy that is with luggage? We have no idea how far we would have to walk at each end etc. Also, the costs involved? Any other suggestions would also be appreciated. Thanks.
2irisheyes Posted March 20, 2008 #2 Share Posted March 20, 2008 Tintown There is frequent train service (most are direct) from London Waterloo station. Takes about 1 hour 20 mins. There are some trains from London Victoria, much slower and may involve a change at Clapham Junction depending on day of the week. There are steps to negotiate at Clap J - not good with luggage. There is a coach (bus) from Victoria Coach Station which is near Victoria rail station. Coaches run hourly and take about 2.5 hours. Unless you're travelling very light you'll need a taxi from either Southampton Centrail rail station or Southampton Coach station. We paid £6 for taxi in 2007 from Coach station. If there are others waiting you may be able to share. Look at www.nationalexpress.co.uk for details of times and fares for coach. You may be able to get "funfare" from London to Southampton which are very cheap but can only be booked online. Website for trains is www.nationalrailenquiries.com Even without funfares coach tickets are generally half the cost of train. Luggage is easy on coach as driver puts it on and takes it off for you. There are other posts about this. Good luck.
Longtime Cruiser Posted March 20, 2008 #3 Share Posted March 20, 2008 I have taken the coach from London to Dover--it was a very simple, easy trip. This year I will take the coach from Heathrow to Southampton. The price is right! Have a safe trip and enjoy. Steven

handfordr Posted July 3, 2008 #6 Share Posted July 3, 2008 Does anyone know how I can buy train tickets on line from London to Southhampton before I leave home? Thanks for any help. Tom There is no advantage in purchasing tickets in advance on the London to Southampton train run. Trains are very frequent and there is no reserved or allocation of seating. A ticket just buys the right to travel. Just purchase tickets on the day from the ticket office at Waterloo using a credit card and you avoid all the potential problems and sometimes additional expense of going through a third party.
