Last Minute

Has anyone ever called say a day or two before a cruise is to leave and see what kind of deal could be had? We live so close to the port that we could feasibly call on a saturday and be able to board the following day. Has anyone done this? Do you think the cruise line would offer a great rate to just fill the room? Curious if anyone has done this or knows someone who has and what their experience was.
