Question about naming pictures....?

Recommended Posts

I see from others pictures that each pic will tell exactly what they are looking at. I can't seem to rename individule pictures without the risk of losing the picture.

Can anybody direct me to a site that can help explain how this is done?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I wrote an article on renaming and one on organizing. Follow the link to my site and read "Organize of Die!" and "Batch Renaming".

Feel free to ask specifics as well.

I do things like Dave does but break things down a little differently and use the folder names to show the event. I don't rename the files but use the EXIF description instead. My drive would look like this:

M:\PICS

.......\2007

.......\2008

............\200804

...................\Easter Egg Hunt c01

...................\Easter Egg Hunt c02

.......................................\Originals

.......................................\RAW

.......................................\Working

.......................................\Upload

.......................................\Print

The structure is mostly self-explanatory but it is tied to the workflow that I use.... I use a piece of software called BreezeBrowser to copy the card(s) and set up the folder structure. I also use EXIFER which allows me to backup, edit and/or restore EXIF data to the JPG as wellas changing the edited file's date/time back to when it was taken.

The below workflow may look tedious it goes fast and beats loosing a file or overwriting something accidentally. I'll take shortcuts depending on the images and intended use.

1a) download card to above fodler structure

1b) download GPS tracklog for event

1c) backup EXIF data using EXIFER

1d) move RAW files to ..\RAW

2) batch process JPG files from originals to TIF in ..\working

2a) convert RAW files (if any) to TIF in ..\working (if needed)

3) crop, rotate or any other post-processing ONLY on TIF files to prevent any loss from multiple saves to JPG files

4) Convert TIF files to JPG into ..\Upload or ..\Print folders

5a) reapply original EXIF data back to processed JPG with additional description or comments

5b) set file date/time stamp back to original

6a) Add GPS coordinates to files using RoboGEO

6b) produce GoogleMaps data if desired.

7) Copy folder(s) to external disk for backup and backup to CD-R or DVD+R (+R has better error correction than -R)

8) Upload to website or or print

Like I said, it may sound tedious not all photos get the full treatment. The key for me is to be consistant and I often save a text file in the events main folder with notes or other data as well as comments on whom to send files to or where I left off...

Also, M:\PICS is a read-only shared drive via my home network so the DW or DD can see/copy the files.

Cheers
