Officer Tigger Posted March 28, 2008 #1 Share Posted March 28, 2008 Next week I am making my first trip to the area. Being in the northeast I do all cold water diving, so this is a change for me. What is a better choice for the beginning of April, a shorty or fullsuit?
bruce-r Posted March 28, 2008 #2 Share Posted March 28, 2008 I'd take a full suit for several reasons. First is because that's what I own. Second, I get cold easily. Third, a full suit give better sun protection and more physical protection from "pokey" things.

Capt_BJ Posted March 28, 2008 #5 Share Posted March 28, 2008 I think you may find a full cold water suit too much. Being 'tropics only' divers. Spousal unit usually wears either a shorty or just a skin. I prefer to wear a set of farmer johns cuz I take the pics and sometimes kneel down. But I can count the times I even thought about wearing a top too.....and my 'full suit' is a thin warm water suit. Not one for the frigid northlands. Course if the water ain't warmer than 85 I have second thoughts about even getting wet.
Officer Tigger Posted March 29, 2008 Author #6 Share Posted March 29, 2008 Hey Capt BJ, I should have mentioned that I am not bringing the thick 7mm that I wear up here. I have a thinner full suit that I now plan on wearing instead of borrowing my buddies shorty.
gmcrow Posted March 29, 2008 #7 Share Posted March 29, 2008 I used to use a long sleeve shorty in the Caribbean, but found that I was always cold on the second dive. Now it's a 3/4 mil combo full length and I wear a thin hood. Have been to Cayman in December and found both air and water temps comfortable with a full suit. xSandman3` Posted March 30, 2008 #8 Share Posted March 30, 2008 Remember that you can become hypothermic in any water cooler than body temperature if you stay in it long enough. I use a 3mm Full suit when teaching in a 90 degree pool, and after a couple of hours, I get downright cold. Dale PADI OWSI
Middleager Posted April 6, 2008 #9 Share Posted April 6, 2008 I wear a 3mm full suit for my Caribbean diving in Aug. I also get cold easier, so I'm comfortable in 3mm.
