Help with Iraklion Port

We will be stopping in Iraklion this summer, and am looking for ideas. Is it easy to get around on your own? How close is the port to the museum and shopping areas?

You're welcome.:) I've also got a bookmark with instructions on taking the bus to Knossos if you're interested. Taxis are pretty reasonable from what I've read, but I like the experience of taking local buses on our port days ... it stops right at the port...let me know if you want the link.

Is there just one port in Heraklion? The brochure for my cruise says that it is an hour bus ride from the port to the Palace at Knossus. They are charging $78 pp for what looks like a short ride and a nominal entry fee. Am I missing something, or merely being ripped off?
