Cruisechic470 Posted April 1, 2008 #1 Share Posted April 1, 2008 I am looking for affordable, non-touristy restaraunts that my family and I can eat at during our pre-cruise stay. We've been to senor frogs so many times, as well as another mexican restaraunt. Many people recommend La Bombonera, has anyone ever been here? How's the food, what do they have to eat? Any other suggestions? Thanks!
Carnival Game Posted April 1, 2008 #2 Share Posted April 1, 2008 Word is that La Bombonera isn't really a dinner place, but more for breakfast & lunch. They're supposed to have really good coffee and bakery. I, myself, was thinking of going to Senor Frogs for dinner. Is the food good or is it really more of a rowdy bar? lovetocruise99 Posted April 1, 2008 #3 Share Posted April 1, 2008 It's more of a rowdy bar. I made the mistake of taking my child there one evening for dinner since we were exhausted and staying next door at the Sheraton. While we were eating, everyone in the entire place started shouting for us to stand up in our chairs to join them in the silly dance they were doing. They wouldn't stop shouting until I stood up in my chair, feeling absolutely ridiculous. The partying goes on until very late at night.
derfp Posted April 1, 2008 #4 Share Posted April 1, 2008 If you liked Senor Frogs you could trythe Hard Rock. We were in Old San Juan last November and tried Cafe Puerto Rico...it is in Christopher Columbus Square, several blocks from Senor Frogs. Many locals eat there....the food is fantastic and very reasonable ($15-30 per person depending upon drinks, appetisers, deserts etc).
Carnival Game Posted April 1, 2008 #5 Share Posted April 1, 2008 Thanks, lovetocruise. My son and I really don't like all that ruckus. We'll pass on Senor Frogs.
Island Annie Posted April 1, 2008 #6 Share Posted April 1, 2008 Two of my favorite places for dinner in OSJ are The ParrotClub & Lamalliquana. Both serve authenic PR dishes as well as fresh seafood and tropical/Caribbean fare. Both are located within walking distance of the cruise ship piers. Tex_Jen Posted April 2, 2008 #10 Share Posted April 2, 2008 That's because it's a typo. Should be http://www.cafeamapola.com. I hope they are much better than the last time I went. Service was awful and I vowed never to return. Jen
Carnival Game Posted April 2, 2008 #11 Share Posted April 2, 2008 I read to avoid that particular neighborhood at night so I'll pass.
zipmom Posted April 2, 2008 #12 Share Posted April 2, 2008 Try heading to the Isla Verde neighborhood and go to The Metropol, local cuisine, local patrons and excellent food - also Mi Casita in the same area but not as good, IMO.

dfb Posted April 6, 2008 #21 Share Posted April 6, 2008 Both are within walking distance. Maybe 15 minutes to get to either from the OSJ cruise piers. Of course, it is uphill going, but it is downhill on the way back!
