A 115,000 tonne P&O cruise liner is heading back to Fincantieri' s

Monfalcone yard after breaking down just 18 hours into her voyage to

her home port of Southampton.

The Ventura left Monfalcone on Sunday after a ceremony on board the

ship in the port of Trieste on Saturday.

Nigel Esdale, managing director of P&O Cruises, told a news

conference in Southampton: "We're gutted. We're obviously

disappointed, but not as disappointed as the passengers who are due

on board."

Captain Alistair Clark , master of the Ventura, added: "Embarrassing

is the wrong word, but it is very disappointing. "

It appears that a propeller shaft bearing overheated, making it

impossible for the 115,000-tonne ship to continue her voyage to what

will eventually be her home port of Southampton.

Mr Esdale said: "We are extremely sorry to bring this news and we

are aware that this a great disappointment to our passengers.

"The situation is totally unforeseen as all the necessary rigorous

checks and tests were completed satisfactorily before Ventura

entered service.

"Passengers will be given a full refund and a compensation package."

The vessel now awaits inspection by the Fincantieri engineers in the

Monfalcone Ship Yard.

Experts say that "There is no way that the Maiden Cruise will go

ahead, but we are confident that Ventura's second cruise will indeed

go ahead, making this a very special Maiden Voyage."

Well for those that were on the maiden voyage......looks like its back on!

Lou...what he doesnt say is which maiden voyage!! if he means the Real one on the 18th then there will no doubt be a lot of unhappy and disatisfied people out there in Ventura land...

If P and O ..do not consider the 2 niter as the maiden cruise then it will be the one on the 18th that will be cancelled sadly.
