A Friendly question for smokers

Recommended Posts

For smokers only! Please!

Celebrity has announced a major change in their smoking policy...No smoking in cabins, balconies. All but one lounge, a small area of the casino and an outside area by the pool (the same place it has always been) will allow smoking. Being that Celebrity is owned by RCI, it could be assumed that the policy will eventually be extended to Royal.

So here is the question:

If the policy gets extended to RCI, would this be the catalist to cause you to quit?

We smoke...Sue cigarettes, me, a cigar with an adult beverage.

We just decided since we love cruising and RCI so much, we would make the effort to quit.

Please, all those strident, pompous types, stay away. It is a serious question for those of us addicted to tobacco.

But I have tried at least 6 times and nothing really seems to work. The longest I have been off of cigs is 57 days, not much I know but it was a good effort. There is a new thing out there I have seen, but a trip to the doctor is nessesary to get the scrip and on top of that my insurance won't pay for it. It is really sad, they all want people to quit smoking but then they won't pay for the aids to do it.

I couldn't remember the name of it, but still it is by perscription only and insurance companies won't pay even a small amount for it

I used Chantix and I will celebrate 6 months this coming tuesday. And MY insurance paid most of it, it cost me 20$ a month so the above statement doesn't apply to all companies so check with yours.

I have been putting my 7$ a day in an envelope and I have 1260$ so far saved. I will be having a blast in the jewelry store on our next cruise in Sept.

No, Insurance does not pay for it. It cost us 105.00 a month for 3 months. but its worth it.

My DW and I both are smokers. We are always talking about quitting and attempted it many times, but it's not that easy. As said it's a shame the insurance companies want you to quit or charge higher premiums to smokers, but won't pay towards any type of programs to quit.

If RCI does adopt the same policy it will be another good reason to try to quit one more time since we really enjoy them so much. We might have to look into other cruise lines though if it comes to that. I could accept total smokefree indoors but still allow smoking on balconies. Granted adjoining balconies can probbably smell smoke at times but it's not the same as second hand smoke being it's that diffused from the breeze out side.

No. I'd simply switch to other lines. If all cruise lines go this way, I'll find something else to do with my vacation dollars.

We are turning my jewelry shopping into a roll call event on one of the at sea days. LOL. Sorry didn't mean to get you in trouble, but I wanted to do something that I would have tangible proof of my success...beyond all the obvious health things of course.

For the OP, no, any change in policy on RCI ships won't cause me to quit smoking. If cruise ships become to restrictive while I'm still smoking, I'll find alternatives. I do NOT see mass market lines banning smoking entirely as at least 40% of their target market would instantly go poof. I can live with what is happening with respect to cabins/balconies etc. I do know I have to quit at some point though :).

Sue L, it's been quite a while for you being off the "evil weed", I hope you are doing well. :) For all those in the process of trying to or thinking about quitting - the best of luck to you. It ain't easy.....

I work for the State of Wyoming and needless to say they want you to quit but they won't pay for any of the tools to help you quit. So everyone that as the insurance that the State Gov. has available has no other option but to pay out of pocket for this expense. This is so sad:(

Chantix works, or it did for my DH and i never thought he would quit.

I agree about Chantix working, my DH who smoked for 43 years has quit using Chantix. He has already seen many health improvements.

It is not unlike any other prescribed medicine and it does have some side effects, he had an upset tummy if he took it on an empty stomach, but that was the only one he ever experienced.

I never in a milliion years thought he woud ever, ever quit, never even tried to quit before taking chantix.

It will be so much easier now to make plane trips I always had to find the flights with the longest layovers so he could grab a smoke!!

I can book any hotel I want now ,as it was becoming harder and harder to find a hotel that allows smoking anywhere on the premises.

I can cruise on any ship I want, in any cabin I choose to book.

Chantix may not be for everyone, but for my DH it was just what I was hoping for!! Smoke free travelin.....

about insurance not paying for it

We had a thirty dollar co-pay and also received three ten rebates from phizer in the mail.

My husband still smokes, I quit 20 years ago, and I have to say NO, nothing would make him quit smoking except death from doing it. He gets very defensive if anyone tells him to quit and will smoke twice as much if I even hint at it. Him smoking was the biggest reason we starting booking a balcony so before he went to bed he could go out and get a cigarette without going to the Promanade deck and if he woke up early he could go out there rather than get dressed to find a spot. We probably would just not go. He does not fly anywhere and the reason is because if it takes hours to go someplace there are no smoking lounges in the airports he would have to go back through security again.

I'm a 'reformed smoker.'

The day my doctor told me to quit, I did. My situation made it easy for me: I was having heart palpitations and it was scary. A couple days after quitting, I got sick. really sick, pneumonia. I highly recommend it for getting over those first few days of heebie-jeebies. After that, it gets easier each day. I came up with some little behavior modification things, phrases to tell myself - "Light up and Die" was very effective. With morning coffee, "I don't do that anymore." Whatever works, eh?

For me, the trick is Mind over Body. I don't allow my Mind to permit my Body to go buy them. If I do not have them I cannot smoke them. Seems silly and simple. It is. find SOMETHING to distract yourself when you want that smoke. Situps, pet the dog, hop on the treadmill, call a friend, do some housework, whatever, until the urge passes. for me, doing something physical to become out of breath worked great.

But here's the thing - you have to kick it for the right reasons or it won't stick! Do it FOR YOURSELF.

If you really want to quit, you can. But you must want to. easiest to do while sick. Sore throat and cigs do not go well together.

I went cold turkey, others need another method. Find what works for you. It's actually not as hard as it seems. It's those first few days when the actual physical habit is screaming at you to cave in that you need to be VERY STRONG. Hold a pencil or a pretzel or whatever.

I'm no one special. If I can do it YOU CAN DO IT.

One year after 'being clean', what I would have spent on smokes paid for airfare for 2 of us to go spend a week in Tenerife, Canary Islands.

Chantix definitely works. My insurance did cover it and I paid $30 for the entire 12 weeks of pills.

I did a stupid thing and stopped taking the pills 1/2 way through because I was doing so well and didn't want to smoke... 3 days later I started again. So definitely stick with it the whole time. But it really DOES work.

And trust me...

Even the $105 per month is a whole lot cheaper than the seven days I spent in the hospital after a heart attack - which certainly encouraged me to quit after 40 years of puffing.

Three years now, and I'm not a N*Z* about it, although I really do notice the smoke!

I quit years ago and part of the reason was I got tired of being treated like a leper..... standing outside in the snow to smoke was just one more reason to do it- but if I were smoking now I would not book a cruise on a line that didn't accommodate me. The ships I sail on are so huge there has to be someplace to cater to smokers without bothering others.

I don't like to be around smoke at all now, but try to be considerate of those who still smoke.

I'm not a smoker, but I promise not to be a N***!:D

Congrats to all that have quit, and are trying to quit.:) It must take a lot of discipline, and can't be easy.

I am sorry that insurance companies don't pay for it, but here is a thought. Would you be spending the same amount or more on cigarettes as the drug would cost? Someone said the Chantix costs $105 per month - would you spend that much on cigs per month? I really don't know how much cigs cost, and I realize it would depend on how much one smokes, but if you look at it that way, perhaps the cost of the meds wouldn't be so out of reach.;)

Good luck to you all. Sue, buy out those jewellery stores! You are an inspiration to many.

I only pay $21 a carton here in Cheyenne and I don't even go through 4 cartons in a month

Chantix is a Pfizer product and it should be about the same cost across the US. If is is not go to a different pharmacy.
