Possibility - larger ship in Mobile, AL

Our local paper announced this morning that the permits have been obtained for the widening of a ship turning basin here in Mobile which would allow much bigger ships here (900"+).

There is a new container ship terminal which will be complete by the end of the year and the goal is to have this finished by that time so that much larger ships can offload cargo there. There was no date given as to when the dredging will begin other than they hope to have it complet by the end of the year.

This could also allow for a bigger cruise ship here. :D

That would be great!! We havent sailed out of Mobile yet....we are waiting for them to retire the Holiday and bring another ship....or bring in a bigger ship.

You should really give the Holiday a try, its a different cruise than a big ship, definitely an experience worth having and well worth the money. I will miss the Holiday when she is gone!

The only problem with this news is that it is not the basin up river from the terminal where the cruise ships turn. This is down river where they are building the new container and intermodal terminals and yards. I dno't think this will help the cruise ships at all unless they turn and then back up the river to the terminal.

It is still much closer than the options that they have now and the ships do have the capability of backing that distance. It isn't that far.

There is also still the need for Thyssenkrupp to offload the steel that they need which will be shipped in from Mexico so the channel will need to be widened further up as well as they get closer to completion of their facility. Construction on the buildings there is ongoing.
