Casemaker Posted May 5, 2008 #1 Share Posted May 5, 2008 Will be flying soon on Lufthansa and British Air from U.S. Lufthansa allows two bags at 50lbs. British Air allows one plus a carry on with a size limit of 22" x 17.5" x 9.85" including wheels, pockets and handles. I have a 22" Travelpro Platinum 5 bag of about 2001 vintage (great bag) yet when measured from the wheels plus the handle is about 24" tall and with pockets is about 11" deep (only 14" wide). It has always worked fine overhead on US carriers. Might I have to buy another bag for carry onto BA here?

The main reason for asking is that if you are flying British Airways from a European destination through London to the US, all on one ticket, you will be entitled to the trans-Atlantic baggage allowance of two bags at 23 kg (= 50 lbs) each - so you wouldn't have any problem to start off with. However, if for some reason you are indeed limited to one bag at 23 kg on BA, and you are connecting (or for any other reason have to clear security) in London, then the bag that you're thinking of carrying on has quite a good chance of being refused at security or by the airline. If you're prepared to take the gamble that it might get involuntarily checked, then it might well be worth it. But if you're not, then you might need to think again.
