They were smoking on both sides when we were on in May/June - that's what I'm getting at!!! There was no escape from the damned smoke

And if this was bothering you so much...did you think of asking the crew to ask them to move to the smoking area? What did you do prior to all the smoking regulations (and I'm not just talking cruising?)

The skunk scenario mentioned earlier in this thread has given me an idea. We all know that increased cigarette taxes, negative publicity about smoking, and studies showing death and disease caused by second hand smoke have all had an effect in reducing smoking. However, many lament the slow pace overall at reducing smoking. Perhaps it is time to fight fire with fire, so to speak.

Animals are often trained to do incredible things. Perhaps we could start training pet skunks to recognize the stench of tobacco smoke and treat the stench as a form of aggression toward the skunk on the part of the smoker. After all, second hand smoke causes death and disease to human non-smokers. In all likelihood, second hand smoke causes death and disease to skunks as well. The skunk could be trained to react to the tobacco stink by sniffing out the epicenter of the tobacco smoke and then doing a full 360 degree spray of anyone and anything in the vicinity. The training could even be tailored to the specific desires of the skunks owner. For example, for my pet skunk I would like it trained to locate cigarette smoke and do a half capacity spray. On the other hand, if my skunk detected cigar or pipe smoke, I would like it to be trained to do a full capacity spray.

I believe this sort of "an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth" approach should be explored as a way of reducing smoking.

Smoking was allowed on both sides of the deck when we were on so not much point asking crew to move people is there when they are allowed to smoke there.

What did we do prior to the smoking ban? We ate in non smoking areas of restaurants and moved elsewhere when someone came near us smoking. We've actually declined to eat in places where non smoking areas were not available. Have you ever seen anyone having an asthma attack?? It's not much fun watching my husband gasping for breath as he has an asthma attack brought on by smoke.

Part of the problem you run into is that smokers are a cold and heartless lot. If they are in a "smoking" area, they could care less if someone near them fell over and died due to their smoking. They'd probably laugh about it. All the more reason tougher restrictions are needed.

When they need their "fix" they are like monsters. When we were onboard there was an announcement made saying as we were refuelling not to smoke on one side of the deck as it could be quite dangerous!!! People were still coming out and lighting up!!! The crew were going spare, telling them to go to the otherside of the ship, but the smokers were still complaining. It's not like there was nowhere to go - they could have even got off the ship and stood on the dockside if they could be bothered to walk a few extra steps!!!

I'm actually talking about when there were no smoking bans anywhere...you could smoke on airplanes, in restaurants, in offices...everywhere.

I'm not saying this personally to you, since I do not know your health issues, but the non smokers who all of a sudden have come down with allergies etc. and don't really have the serious health issues, but just don't like it for any reason, really make it tough for those that have real health problems. Maybe those are the folks you should be attacking also....

I do believe the majority of smokers are polite and do follow the regulations, but to argue with people who are so zealous to a point of name calling and ridiculous generalizations, really hurt the real issue.

Firstly I'm not attacking anyone - just stating the facts.

The smokers who I've asked to be a bit more considerate when wafting their smoke into my face or my children's faces were not polite at all. I've since found it easier to just get up and move, which is what we've always done even since before the ban came into place.

That is an absolutely ridiculous generalisation to make! Its like saying all drinkers are cold and heartless! Lets keep this discussion civil shall we? Everyone is entitled to their opinion I agree but some people are just being insulting here. Smokers and non smokers alike should follow the rules so if non smokers object to the fact that on some ships smokers are allowed to smoke on all open decks, why dont they go on cruise ships where there are designated open decks for smokers? Smoking is not illegal, brings in a huge amount of revenue in Britain because of the taxes and so therefore smokers have rights too until it is made illegal altogether!!

Which bar would you choose!. Using Celebration as an example you have 5 bars:-

Horizons - no as it is popular

Mezzazine bar in showlounge - no because of showlounge

Liberties - maybe but what about the activities there

Lido bar - no because of the food

Hemingways - no because it is large and the casino is adjacent

So there you have the problem, all bars are venues for other activities in which non-smoking passengers might object to the smoke. Ideally you need a bar which is dedicated to smoking with the appropriate air conditioning to keep the smoke away from the rest of the ship, and no other activities scheduled there.

Having just returned from Destiny the Sky bar would be the most suitable .

The lido bar is attached to the buffet restaurant so no go on that one. You could possibly convert the kids zone!!!, or part of that vast acreage of fitness centre.

Could we please stick to facts.

]Having just returned from Destiny the Buffet is actually one floor below the Lido bar.In addition the fitness centre is the smallest I have ever seen.On Independence of the Seas it was better tham most private land based clubs.

I was sticking to facts as if you read my post you will see I was talking about the Celebration and probably the Spirit as well. On these ships the Lido bar and restaurant are on the same deck (deck 5 Broadway) with half the bar inside the restaurant and half outside on the Lido deck.

Is not about time to move on from this subject?

As an OV cruiser -who will be looking for other Lines to sail on . I find some of the comments here quite comical ..

I am a smoker ---- I do NOt smoke in my home -- I adhere to smoking policies wherever.

I am not rude or inconsiderate.

As Destiny *may be an option* for us ........ I would need to know their policy on smoking BEFORE I would make a booking and if somebody is saying the TA's are not up on this subject -- There lies the problem -- I want to know that I can smoke in designated areas --as Non smokers also need to know they have a comfortable smoke free environment to use .

And every one will be happy .......................... :D

Hi GixxerGal

We have been on the Destiny 3 times so far. My OH is a smoker, I am not.

Yes they do have designated areas where you can smoke. One side of the pool is available for smokers as is an area outside the Oklahoma Lounge. Definately not in the cabins.

There are probably other areas as well but I can't remember off the top of my head (being the non smoker).

Hope this helps.

Regards

Janet

Oh no! Gixxer girl, starting this thread going again is like raising the dead.

The thread was originally about 14 pages long, but vast pages got cut out by the mods when Banjoman1 rattled a few cages. In the end I think he vowed never to post on these boards again. I hope he keeps his promise, as we don't want the same vitriol as before.

Though having said that it was good fun, just as good in fact as when the OV users started to wind up the P&O boards up a few months ago..... naughty, naughty:D

You just cannot move on can you.

It was mainly your comments that were removed from this site because I asked for them to be removed.

We did win our case against Thomson in the County Court and we received 60% back.

We had two wonderful all inclusive holidays this year in hotels in Crete and majorca. We shall no longer cruise although Cunard " Grill Class " appears an option.

From time to time I will still visit this site just to reply to the likes of you.
