Globaliser Posted April 13, 2004 #28 Share Posted April 13, 2004 Ever dissatisfied, I've collected a few more Jewel links. cuppy Posted April 13, 2004 #31 Share Posted April 13, 2004 richterscale - I have not done the bob excursion yet. I had wanted to do it while we were in the Bahamas but I got a really bad cold before we left and couldn't. My icon is my hubby & I with funship freddy from our Carnival cruise - I am having it changed hopefully this week. My husband took a really good shot of the RCCL anchor ice sculpture with a blue light going through it at the crown & anchor party. That is going to be my new picture soon. You are always a great source !!! Thanks so much!

It's been a pleasure to research this for myself, and then to share with others who are looking forward to seeing the Jewel as much as I am. Particularly as I missed something I was looking forward to so much - the Ems passage. I've also learnt an awful lot about how to Google. Seven months ago, when I happened to find the 2-night shakedown cruises on the RCI website, I simply thought that one of them would be a bit of a laugh. A new ship, a new (for me) cruise line, and a shakedown cruise where one could expect lots to go wrong (as many ship people have warned me about since). Little did I know how caught up I would get in the final phases of her construction and "birth". I feel more attached to her already than any other ship that I've ever sailed on. Anyway, one more webpage. This page is from someone's visit to the Meyer Werft shipyard in December 2002, a month or so after Jewel's "keel laying", and most of the photos are of the Serenade. The two photos of the Jewel herself are remarkably uninformative. However, the real interest for me was in the webcam photo at the bottom right of the page, which dates from 17 March 2003. It seems still to be hosted on the Meyer Werft servers, although I hadn't found it directly and there's no clue as to which page it belongs to (if any). If this really is the Jewel (which looks about right), it was taken at a much earlier stage of construction than any other webcam photo I've got. madforcruising Posted April 19, 2004 Author #38 Share Posted April 19, 2004 You are right I would wonder how that feels lying in a bed with the ship around you rocking and you lying without feeling the motion (or feeling the motion ?!?). Also think about a computer malfunction I also wonder why RCCL isn´t advertising this feature and We haven´t read about this on the board from anyone expierienced it (maybe I missed this one) And the rumor of a bowling lane on the Ultra Voyager could get true. You just watch the ship rock and roll around you while you stay pretty still. It's also great to watch the waterfalls off the edges of the pools. But seriously, that bed doesn't deal with what disturbs my sleep most on the first rough night, which is the falling feeling. I find myself waking up for half of every wave, waiting for the ship to reach the bottom and start upwards again, anxious that the falling won't stop (however much I can tell myself intellectually that it will). Fortunately, I only ever get one night of this on a cruise, if there are any rough nights at all. I also wonder why it's only on one ship, and unadvertised. Maybe nobody really thinks very much of it ... On another topic, it looks like the ship is scheduled going out to sea at about 1200 on Friday 23 April (it's a constantly updated webpage). Is this for her first cruise, or is she going out for another test run before 25 April? And does anyone know when and where she is being christened? madforcruising Posted April 19, 2004 Author #41 Share Posted April 19, 2004 I heard somewhere here on the board that she will be christened at Southampton. I think her last 2-night shakedown cruise is 5 May Southampton-Southampton, and then there's an overnight pause before she starts her first "proper" cruise on 8 May ex-Southampton. Now to try to get an invite to the party ... funnily enough I have a day off work on 7 May because I was supposed to be starting a cruise on the Westerdam that day. madforcruising Posted April 19, 2004 Author #43 Share Posted April 19, 2004 Our cruise on 05/28 was sold out, too and now there are many rooms available again. It would be a good idea to go to the christening to pay attention they don´t damage the ship with the bottle I think when she leaves Eemshaven 04/23 that could be not for sea trials but for her way to Hamburg to be there for her first cruises. madforcruising Posted April 22, 2004 Author #47 Share Posted April 22, 2004 Globaliser: The Jewel of the Seas joined today the RCCL fleet officially.
