annie2 Posted May 9, 2008 #1 Share Posted May 9, 2008 Have booked a superior verandah suite for an upcoming Alaska cruise. I am wondering if I can make same day dining reservations via the telephone concierge?

Two if by Sea Posted May 9, 2008 #4 Share Posted May 9, 2008 Just wondering -- can a telephone concierge make restaurant reservations at a port restaurant prior to the ship docking? Wouldn't they have to charge you $16.00/minute for the ship-to-shore phone call?
JimS2008 Posted May 9, 2008 #5 Share Posted May 9, 2008 Not sure -- if the ship is within range of shore (8 miles) then would a regular cell would work?
kryos Posted May 10, 2008 #6 Share Posted May 10, 2008 I could be wrong, but I don't believe that "telephone concierge" is a full-service concierge like the one in the Neptune Lounge. Sure, they can make onboard reservations for you, and handle some minor matters, but I doubt they're gonna get involved in making restaurant reservations in port. From what I understand that "telephone concierge" is basically a joke. When you pick up the phone and call, all you are getting is the front desk. You have the "privilege" of handling certain things over the phone that others in lesser accommodations would have to trudge to the front desk personally for. You don't have the same level of service that folks using the Neptune Lounge would have, and I doubt that would include convoluted requests for such things as restaurant reservations in port. localady Posted May 10, 2008 #8 Share Posted May 10, 2008 We've made our own port dining reservations prior to embarking the cruise. Many restaurants have websites/email addys which makes it handy. It worked out wonderfully for us!:D
Capital Cruiser Posted May 10, 2008 #9 Share Posted May 10, 2008 My experience with the telephone concierge on the Westerdam was that no one ever answered the phone.
annie2 Posted May 10, 2008 Author #10 Share Posted May 10, 2008 Thanks for all the replies. I am thinking we will just walk in for dining and not stress about any reservations. I don't mind waiting a few minutes if we have to.
Two if by Sea Posted May 10, 2008 #11 Share Posted May 10, 2008 What about folks in a Deluxe Suite, when the Neptune Lounge is closed? Do we get the same "telephone concierge" that everyone else gets, and possibly one who never answers the phone? When I was at a Marriott recently, every time I picked up the phone and pressed a certain button, someone answered immediately, addressed me by name (but how they knew I wasn't my spouse I have no idea -- maybe there's a camera hidden in the phone receiver) and asked how they could serve me. It was a little unnerving, frankly, but it did mean things got done. Then they'd always call again 10 minutes later to make sure whatever I wanted had been taken care of. JimS2008 Posted May 10, 2008 #12 Share Posted May 10, 2008 After four (4) rings and no answer -- I walk down to the desk - explain my situation and demand a free drink at the bar --- works everytime!
