weather related question for Mexican Riviera

Recommended Posts

Ok...I understand that you shouldn't book the Caribbean in hurricane season...my question is--

Is there a time in the Mexican Riviera area that we should avoid because of the weather?

Or is the weather generally good?

Thanks!

The Mexican Riviera also gets hurricanes about the same time as the Caribbean but they are generally not as strong and less frequent. But it is still a possibility. The weather is generally good, gets pretty hot in the summer. In Puerto Vallarta you can add in the humidity as well. Shouldn't much bother Georgian's however. October is probably the worst month for Puerto Vallarta. September can be spotty weather in Cabo but it is generally good. Looking to sport fish (marlin) in Cabo, August - October is best but other month's are good as well. Want a whale watching experience in Cabo, Jan - Feb are the best, we like early Feb (first or second week) for that.

Winter months in the Mexican Riviera means a cool to cold day on the ship as you leave Southern California and cruise down Baja California. So figure your first and last sea days will not be great for sitting by the pool unless it has a covered roof which many have at least one. Still a great time to cruise. Want to avoid the kids, avoid Spring Break, Summer, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Ocean water is cold 60-65 degrees in Cabo in the Spring (Jan-April), great the rest of the year. Better however in PV and Maz during that time.

YIKES!!!!!

Why do you say that?

We're heading to Cabo, Mazatlan, and Puerto Vallarta in mid-October on the STAR.

Hopefully you meant it was just the worst for humidity. In that case, I'll be thrilled!

Thanks!

October is just the worst for weather in PV. It's not unbearable, just a little worse than other times. We were there for a week a few years ago at a timeshare and we were fine. Pacific storms can hit during this time but it is rare. Just like the Caribbean during hurricane season, you face the potential of port cancellations and re-routing. The difference is that there are fewer choices in alternate ports so you may just get an extra "at sea" day. In October in PV, it is considered the off-season or shoulder season for timeshare visitors. Some smaller restaurants may be closed, have restricted menu's, or smaller staff/operating hours. We still had a great time. Because of the reduced crowds, some of the restaurants were very happy to see us. At one, because we were a group of 13, we all got a free, after dinner drink on the house.

Just to give you hope, we cruised down to Cabo, P.V., & Mazatlan the first week in October and it was absolutely perfect! The humidity was low, temps were around 90 and water was like bath water! The whole 7 days were amazing! Enjoy your trip and don't worry about the weather.

April is very nice but the water may still be a little cold for swimming (mid to high 60's) around Cabo. Early April still has pretty good whale watching, fading out as you get closer to May. Careful of Spring Break cruises in early April, but should not be as much of a problem on the 7 day trips (3, 4 & 5 day trips are worse), but still be aware. Deep Sea fishing is not as great during March/April if that is an issue. Still good, but not great, not a lot of Marlin.

June is good. Whales are long gone, fishing is better, water is warming up in Cabo. Pretty hot. Storms should not be an issue.
