First Time on NCL

This is my first time cruising with NCL and I have a few questions. This will be my 6th cruise but the others were on Carnival and Disney. We are cruising on the Star to Alaska in August. I am trying to understand the restaurant situation. These are my questions.

1. How many restaurants have a fee?

2. Which restaurants require a reservation?

3. Can you just show up at your designated restaurant whenever you want and eat?

You don't have a designated restaurant. All restaurants are available for you every night. Some require reservations in advance, some don't. Some require surcharge fees, some don't.

1. How many restaurants have a fee?

It varies from ship to ship. Most NCL have 2 main dining rooms, a buffet, a 24 hour diner type restaurant plus room service that are free. Some have 1 other that is free and then there are the specialty restaurants which charge a fee. A steak house, french bistro, Asian, etc. Go to ncl.com, click on "Star". Then "explore the public rooms". That will show you all the restaurants onboard and which ones have a surcharge.

2. Which restaurants require a reservation?

Specialty (fee) restaurants require a reservation.

3. Can you just show up at your designated restaurant whenever you want and eat?

Don't know what you mean by your "designated restaurant". If you are talking free (included) dining venues, you can show up at any of them, at any time, when they are open. Their hours will be listed in the Freestyle Dailey. If you are talking about specialty (fee) restaurants, you have to make a reservation and show up at your reservation time.

Enjoy your trip!

the versailles and aqua are the 2 main dining rooms...no reservations, unless a group of 8 or more. they share a kitchen and use the same menu..you can see the menu for the day at the reservations desk or on display in front of the versailles.

use these like a regular restaurant at home, just go (during their hours open) and they will seat you.

cagney's is the steakhouse,reservation/surcharge ($20 for regular menu, $30 for steakhouse specials)

le bisto is the french dining, reservation/surcharge..not sure of the recent surcharge

all the asians are reservation/surcharge.

la trattoria is italian, endless summer is a type of mexician..haven't heard if they have added a surcharge yet, or not. when i was on her, there wasn't a surcharge for these. reservations are requested, but (sometimes) you can do a walk-up late.

blue lagoon..24hr diner, comfort foods..hamburgers/wing and such. i loved the chili when coming back from town in alaska. no fees

then check the dailys for other food offers for that day, casino often has a snack or buffet after 11pm, nice weather they do a BBQ by the pool,

fish and chips at one of the bars..no fees for any.
