anthk333 Posted July 2, 2008 #176 Share Posted July 2, 2008 July 1st has come and pretty much gone. Aboslutely NOTHING on the radar as far as any announcement. I still believe that NOTHING will be announced in the year 2008. I predict that this will be re-visited no earlier than sometime early 2009, if at all. Apparently the sky is not falling (at least as far as the PVSA goes. Fuel prices are a different subject.......) I'm still waiting for the 1973 announcement. ;)
smeyer418 Posted July 2, 2008 #177 Share Posted July 2, 2008 for those of you who are holding your breathe for the announcement by 7/1 its time to start breathing again. My take is this will be issued in December as I have said all along. But no one really knows. It may be dead it may be alive and kicking but whatever will come out won't look like the initial announcement- IMO.
DAGVBSB Posted July 3, 2008 #178 Share Posted July 3, 2008 Hey I said all along that July 1 would make good sense for a release date.... but we have to remember... it is the government that we are dealing with here... they usually don't do what is normal or expected...lol. Well, this is my last post before I power down the computer for two weeks. We fly to Newark in the morning. SO, that will probably get the decision issued because I am gone, lol. (and I don't buy computer time while on a cruise.....) If the decision does come out... play nice and save something for me. See ya....

pris993 Posted July 3, 2008 #181 Share Posted July 3, 2008 I worked for the federal govt, one of those low level workers i.e., staff specialist for 29 years and retired in l999. It looks likes nothing has changed, change is not something the government does well or quickly. :) I wonder if this issue will ever be put to bed? Hopefully by the time you get back, I'll actually be through with the dentist working on this tooth. The infection is finally gone, but now I have to see another specialist about doing something with my gum so that it will hold the new crown. :(

Do you actually think they are going to make an announcement saying they decided to do nothing. Like someone said, this has been discussed since the 1970's and I don't think they ever made an announcement saying it was ever settled then. Actually, they DID make announcements not only in the 70's, but in the 90's when it was discussed again by Senator McCain and the Commerce Committee. It was somewhat stressful for awhile. Didn't want to do that again, so we will be departing from Vancouver (as we have for many sailings in the past) in 2009. You will know when and if the new regulation is published in the Federal register. since some of the cruise lines are publicly traded that's how they handle this. If they decide to not issue a regulation they may or may not tell any one.

cvanhorn Posted July 10, 2008 Author #196 Share Posted July 10, 2008 I agree they will probably wait until the new admin takes over in jan Nothing yet, so you are probably correct. They may be waiting to see how NCL America does financially, seems they are pleased with the stats so far with just the one ship.
glgolfer Posted July 10, 2008 #197 Share Posted July 10, 2008 If the one ship sails full and makes a profit, then there is no need for any change. That would negate the unfair competition argument.

smeyer418 Posted July 10, 2008 #199 Share Posted July 10, 2008 Wonder if the fact that this is the "off season" for the other cruise lines is the reason they are booked???:D Full on a cruise ship is an interesting term. Most cruise lines will do about anything to make sure the ship is "full" even greatly discounting to get people on board. And what is full? Is it full of the lower berths? or really full. Most ships that have 1000 room as an example would be full by some definitions if 2000 people were aboard(2 per room) but the truly full doesn't happen until the ship has about 2600 people(130% of lower includes 3 and 4's in the rooms). So if the cruise is only 100% full its actually fairly empty, I understand thgat this is almost a contradiction of terms...but it reflects the cruise reality on what is "full"

If they decide to not issue a regulation they may or may not tell any one. I am now of the belief that no announcement is going to be made. I think they are just going to bury this. After the number of public comments against this and the big time players like Schwartznegger, Feinstein, Snowe and the Hawaii and New England state governments coming out so heavily against this, I think the C&BP has rethought the whole change. Since most lines are extending their stays in Ensenada to be more compliant with the orginal PVSA, that may satisfy the C&BP. They have probably decided to do nothing and just leave things as they are. I'm sure NCL is not happy about it, but in this case, the government doing nothing is probably the best thing for all.
