Oslo on our own ..Information Please.

Recommended Posts

Hi ...We will be in Oslo this coming August ...9 to 5 ...and rather do the Ship's Tour we understand that it is quite easy to get around on our own. Is that True?

We are considering buying an Oslo Pass from the T1 which we understand lets us on the Ferry, the buses and into the museums....is that correct? and if so is that the way to go?

How much does this all in one day pass cost?

We want to visit the Viking Ship Museum, The Open Air Museum, the Kon Tiki Museum, Vigeland park and the top of the Ski Jump. We understand this is doable and still have some time to shop a bit. Is this correct.

Would appreciate any and all advice?

Thank You

Ken

We are going to do Oslo on our own and it does look easy enough. We decided to get the Oslo card online to save time at the pier (even though it's more expensive). I charged it and the bill was 82.76 plus 2.48 foreign transaction fee for 2 cards.

Hi !

We are just back from the Baltic Cruise on the Crown Princess !

We have bought a One Day Senior Pass for 100 KR(around 20 $) that entitles you to free access to museums, ferries, bus and trams for 24 hrs !

Buy it at the TI right beside the ship on the pier below the Fortress !

Do not miss the Kon Tiki Museum ! It is quite interesting !

Here is the thread I started discussing all of our DIY travels in the Baltics. We just went at the beginning of May, so I included bus info and our itinerary. Post #7 has all the port info. If you are going to buy your Oslo pass at the port, I would get there early to be first in line, otherwise wait a bit. We were first to get our passes, but others had to wait in a very long line. The other suggestion is to walk to the TI in town (only 5 min or so). Maybe there won't be as much of a wait.

Everything you are looking to do is reachable in just a couple of buses / trams. The ski jump takes about 20 min by train to get up the hill. Even then, there is a steep climb to the museum, then about 200 steps to get up to the lookout of the jump. Just giving you a heads up - I had no idea...

This is excellent information as we intend to purchase our Passes on the day we arrive in Oslo. Just to confirm ....they will allow us to buy a Senior's Pass even though we are Tourists/Foreigners. The reason I am asking is that we tried this in Sydney, Australia two years ago but to do so we had to be Australian.

Thank you for the excellent review.

We want to thank everyone for taking the time to respond so quickly to our question. The information that you have passed along to us will make getting around on our own in Oslo, so much easier.

Cheers

We purchased the pass online and had to pick it up at the TI near the ship -- so it will be cheaper for you to just purchase it right there. We did not go to the ski jump when we were there. We spent a lot of time at the Outdoor Museum, Viking Ship Museum, Fram & Kon Tiki. We went to that island first (you can go by bus or ferry) and saw all four of these attractions on the Oslo card. We went to the Viking Ship Museum first and then the Outdoor Museum. Wish I had more time to spend at the Outdoor Museum -- you could spend a whole day there. Catch the bus at the Outdoor Museum to the Fram & Kon Tiki. We walked (about 1/2 hour) and lost some time that way. We then ferried back to "town" and wandered around a little before we had to get back on the ship. We were there from 9am to 6pm. We also wished we had time to go thru the Old Fort which was next to where the ship was docked.

Have a great time. We wish we could go back!!!

All this advice has been excellent and much appreciataed. Thanks. One more question, though. My ship docks at 11:00 a.m. and departs at 8:00 p.m. Considering that many of these sites closed at 5:00 or 6:00, and I essentially miss out on the morning, what would be the best routhng to maximize the time. Also, which sites to you recommend omitting? I will be visiting the Vasa Viking ship museum in Stokholm. Thanks for any info.

I hate recommending sites to visit! What may appeal to us may not appeal to others - so with that in mind, don't come after me if you disagree.

First of all, the Vasa in Stockholm is not a Viking museum - it is sailing ship that sank in the harbor in 1628 and lay on the bottom for 333 years. It is absolutely fascinating - and should not be missed.

There is a Viking museum in Oslo with three actual ships from the Viking age. It is in Bygdoy across the harbor and requires a short ferry ride plus a 15 minute walk to the Museum. It, too, is worth it, but considering your limited time, you might feel otherwise.
