Hi Vanessa,

I'm not Puerto Rican, but I would really appreciate any info you can give me.

We're arriving in PR 2 days early for our May 30 cruise on AOS. We want to do Bacardi, and Arecibo/Camuy Caves on Friday afternoon and Saturday. Do you know of any reputable tour companies we could use? I have talked with Tropical tours of PR and emailed Castillo tours, but we don't know which to choose.

We'd appreciate any help as we want to get the best tour for our $$.

Thanks a bunch.

Kim

Hi,

Puerto Rican from NYC here. Glad to see some other boricuas on here. Going on the AOS 4/18/2004 Can't wait.

Also read alot of negative posts of how "rude and loud" the puerto rican passengers are. How do you feel when you read those threads? I personally get very upset when I read them.

Vanessa,I am asking you the question not the others puerto ricans on this board, as I don't know who they are.

I would like to hear your opinion on this? Do you appreciate people bad mouthing our culture due to ignorance? Just because they come from the midwest or some other US city which hasn't been exposed to a latino population, they shouldn't have a small closeted mind. I am of Puerto Rican heritage, I am educated and a health professional, I think every nationality has their share of misfits but one shouldn't judge a whole race based on conduct. I have seen "Americans" from the mainland (Side note puerto ricans are Americans too if someone who is reading this didnt know) on other cruises that have acted way out of line. Is that acceptable? I don't think so. Just because the residents of Puerto Rico got a lower price on their cabins than you, is not a reason to bad mouth them. Business is Business and RCL is doing what it has to do to keep in business and to give "EVERYONE" a wonderful vacation no matter what they have paid for a inside, outside balcony, special fare, etc !!!!

I am just asking to all cruisers who chose to leave from San Juan, keep an open mind and have fun, but don't degrade one particular nationality due to a bad experience you may have had or it doesn't fit in your "code of conduct"

Well I just needed to vent. Everyone Have a GREAT CRUISE!!!! PARTY UP!!!! icon_smile.gif

I am one of the midwest people you are talking about. I lived in Durado Beach for six months. Worked at Merck in Barceloneta. I found the Puerto Rico people to be most gracious and kind. It was a fun period in my life.....

Like every where it depends on your attitude.

Hi John,

I am glad to hear your opinion, I feel bad making a classification such as "midwest people", I been in that area myself and found the people there to be very friendly.

I was just very angry at the time when writing this post after reading so many negative posts on Puerto Rico, I know Barceloneta, my family is from manati, you should be familiar with that area since it is so close.

And you are right...attitude is everything! icon_smile.gif

HELLO EVERYONE:

premiumrican

My opinion...

I love my island and i love my culture.... Some months ago, i post a thread calling to Puerto Rican people in this board and they blocked to me. I don't know why but, I think, other people think about the people of Puerto Rico that, we are too crazy... The last time which I was in the Adventure of the Seas, the total amount of people that were in that boat was 3,500. Of these 3.500 people, 1.600 were Puerto Rican. I listened by the corridors of the boat the non-Puerto Rican that they said that we were very liberal, that we liked much the shout and that them bad our behavior.

I love when the people say to me, "I love the Puerto Rican people, the culture and all...."

I love my island...

What do you think about our island?

Hi-- Iam curious. What is boricua? Does it just mean that you are from Puerto Rico or something more specific? I enjoy meeting folks from cultures different than my own and like to have all the information I can. Thanks! icon_smile.gif

We lived on the island of Vieques in the mid 70s and LOVED Puerto Rico and found the people very friendly. When we sailed on Destiny 2 years ago we went back and spent two days on Vieques pre-cruise. We loved it so much that my oldest daughter (who was only 3 when we lived there) and SIL will be doing to Vieques next week for 2 days before a conference my SIL is attending in Fajardo. There is nothing like kayaking or swimming in the Bioluminescent Bay on Vieques. It was one of the best tours we have ever experienced. Here are a few view from atop a hill on Vieques

Rala

BORICUA is a nickname for all Puerto Ricans... WE love that....

WE are very happy....Puerto Rico today is caught between two diverse cultures and is constantly under scrutiny and judgement of visitors with only a scant understanding of the island and its people. Outsiders and especially mainland Americans will increasingly be called upon to understand Puerto Rico and her unique culture.

Apart from the very obvious difference in the language, many of these cultural differences are harder to specify and quantify than are the formal elements in common just mentioned. At social and cultural levels profound differences do exist between people of different backgrounds.

The Taíno culture was the first infuence in Puerto Rican culture but it was Spanish culture which most greatly infuenced the island's history until the beggining of this century. When the Spanish forced the Tainos into slavery, virtually the entire indigenous population was decimated, except for a few Amerindians who escaped into the remote mountains. Eventually they intermarried with the poor Spanish farmers and became known as jíbaros. Because of industrialization and migration to the cities few real jíbaros remain. Puerto Rico also has a rich African culture dating from the importation of Africans as slaves by the Spaniards in past centuries. The people of Puerto Rico represent a mixture of races, cultures, languages and religions. They draw their unique heritage from the Tainos, from Spanish loyalists who sought refuge here, from the African slaves and from other Caribbean islanders who came to the island in search of jobs. The Spanish they speak is a mix too, different somewhat from Castillian Spanish, with many words borrowed from the pre-Colombian Amerindian tongue right up to modern-day English.American culture has had a progressive effect upon Puerto Rican culture since 1898 but especially so after the 40's. Some Puerto Ricans are not happy with the result of that influence; others welcome it.

There is an essential dichotomy of Puerto Rico's relationship with the United States. Within American jurisdiction, as reflected by common citizenship, flag, currency and numerous applicable Federal laws, Puerto Rico might seem in everything but name a State of the Union. But on the other side you will find a culture and society profoundly different from that in the mainland. It is a rich and varied culture but a unique one emanating from all those rich influences. This makes Puerto Rico a unique blend of the Spanish-Caribbean "joy of living" and the American drive for organization and forward-thinking.

MORE INFO ABOUT OUR CULTURE...

SI ERES BORICUA DE VERDAD GRITAME WEEEEPAAAA!

Hi to all, I am Daniel from Ponce, Puerto Rico, PRs second most important city, and capital of the rest of the Island... LOL!

To answer a bit more specifically to Rala, our Island was called Boriken (one of the most accepted versions of the name) by the Taino natives that lived here until the Spanish genocide that others call it conquest or colonization) began. So, from Boriken, or Borinquen (modern usage) comes the patronimic Boricua.

As for US being loud and raunchy, well, we are... LOL! At least many "typical" US citizens (if ther is such a thing) consider us that way. We are more prone to partying, which is typical of most Latin American cultures. But, so are Italians, Greeks, Africans, etc. Point is, we have our way of having a good time, wchih might be strange to others. Try coming to PR during Xmas time and you will see.

So, this is a great thread! I am going on 9/29 on the AOTS for my fourth cruise, second time in a RCI ship. Any tips/ pointers/ experiences that you wanna share!

oh, and DO visit Ponce, it's a 1.30-hr. drive from San juan that you will enjoy at its fullest! icon_smile.gif

hi Daniel,

Glad to see your post on this thread. I am born and raise in NYC pero I was taught to learn and be proud of my heritage. Espanol ha sido mi primera lenguaje. Since Almost all of my family is in PR, how can't I not love it. I say I was robbed by not having Puerto Rico as my birthplace on my passport.

I been to Ponce a few times since my father is from Guanica it is very close and my mom is from Manati. Every ethnic nationality seems to more liberated and so family oriented. WE ALL SAW "MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING"!!!! Just replace the lamb with a big fat PIG!!! icon_smile.gif I won't even mention las morcillas. icon_biggrin.gif

I have sailed the Monarch of the seas when it was in Puerto Rico. It was great it was a family cruise, so I know what it is like to be with the puerto rican family, yes it was 13 of us!!! and had a GREAT TIME!!! My cousin and I came in second in the merengue contest que cosa!!!!

I am sailing the AOS next week with my partner and I can't wait, My cousins are going to pick me up at the airport and then at the pier on the return to do the family thing until our flight that leaves at 8:30 pm.

I'll try to give you pointers on this cruise, I was on the Serenade here in NYC the last cruise before they sent her to SJU to Canada, we were on the 13th voyage and it was great never been on a mega ship so I am excited.

Have a great Easter guys!!!

To Vanilousky and Guatiao, Thank you so much for telling me about the history of your country. It is obvious how proud you both are. I love history and am very interested in cultural anthropology, so I just soaked up everything you said like a sponge! It was so kind of you to take the time to reply in such detail. I hope someday to visit and I will remember all you have said. Thank you! icon_smile.gif

You're welcome, Rala! Anyone should be proud of the great things of his/her country, and humble enough to reccognize the negative ones.

Premiumrican, have a GREAT trip, and be an example to PR descendants over in the US...

ERsecurity, I believe you are one of those who likes to "observe" what happens here on Fridays... LOL!

And Vanilousky, not everyone loves going to the beach on Holy Friday... I guess that out of San Juan, many people either stay home or go to church... I know I do! :-)

Can I begin to pack now for 9/19 on the AOTS?? LOL!

Sorry to intrude on your PR post. I see you are traveling with us on AOS October 3. Please stop by our roll call. You will indeed feel welcome. We are also trying to plan a CC meeting in PR with the 10/3 Destiny cruisers that Saturday afternoon/evening or Sunday morning.

Premiumrican: I know sometimes you just can't help defending your culture but as you said also, some people are ignorant. It doesn't matter what part of the U.S. ignorance is everywhere. And you think people are not used to your culture, I'm American born and raised and they still aren't used to mine.

Me ... I love all people just can't stand people who have racial prejudices.

Hi,

I agree with the other posters, I don't care for anyone with racial prejudices. But, would someone who is familiar with San Juan and tour agencies, please try to answer my question.

We want to tour Bacardi and Arecibo/Camuy caves. Who is a reputable tour agency in San Juan for us to use?

Thanks, and can't wait to see your beautiful country again for a more lengthy stay to explore.

My husband was born in Santuce when his dad was in the service and his original birth certificate was a tiny piece of thin paper.(1959) When he went for his passport two years ago they would not accept the birth certificate and we had to call San Juan to get an updated one. We got it in about a week.

We sailed on AOS last year and half the ship was PR..we loved it. We had no problems and I must say it was the dressiest cruise we've been on. We love sailing from San Juan.

We are on Empress of the Seas in November and I am sure that the PR workers will do a wonderful job with the renovations....
