Rental Car Near Tender In Newport RI

Is there a rental car company near where the tenders come in? I would like to visit different mansions that are not apart of the same tour. My husband thought renting a car might be a good option for us.

Also, if anyone knows: how is tendering in Newport? Is it easy to get off, or will it take us hours?

I did a Google on CAR RENTAL NEWPORT RI and came up with numerous hits. The problem is that none are an easy walk from the tender dock. So you will have to arrange a pick-up and drop off. I’m certain that most agencies will do that. New problem(s), you will need a time and place to be picked up. The area near the tender dock has very limited parking and most will be taken by tour buses for the cruise pax.

My suggestion would be to take a local bus to the mansion general area and select the mansions that are not part of any tour. This will involve more walking but not excessive and you’ll have the added bonus of seeing up close what the tour pax see as a drive by.

For regular bus service, you would want a bus # 67 (Bellevue / Salve Regina Univ) outbound. If you are lucky and are traveling when the Newport seasonal bus service is available, you could take the trolley that runs an extended route on Bellevue Ave (same route # as regular).

Here is the RI transit home page: http://www.ripta.com/

Here is the link for the seasonal service: http://www.ripta.com/content320.html

Since I’ve never tendered in at Newport, I would estimate the tender ride in takes 5-7 minutes. The tender dock can take up to 4 tenders, IIRC.

Enjoy your cruise and Newport

Thank you for all the information. Unfortunately the bus won't work for us, as my Gram will need to use a wheelchair. I think car rental seems like more hassle than worth! Back to the drawing board!!

SBtS gives good info.

You could probably rent a car thru the Newport Marriott Hotel (I'm sure they could be the drop off point), which is right where the tenders dock. Give them a call (1-800-458-3066). The only "mansion" apart of the Preservation Society not accessible by walking from the harbor is The Green Mansions which is a topiary garden about 5-6 miles up island.

Also Rough Point, Astors Beechwood, and Bellcourt Castle are a long walk. With a wheelchair, it would be immensely more manageable from a car.

Thanks for the info. I called the number and they transferred me to the hotel. They don't actually have a car rental place there, but they do have an Enterprise phone. i have to call Enterprise and see if they can arrange to have a car there or not.

I'm starting to do our research on Newport, and had a couple more questions related to this thread.

1) Is it always a tender port, or do some of the cruise ships dock?

2) If we were to rent a car, are there any drives outside of the immediate Newport area that would be worthwhile? We're not particularly interested in seeing the mansion, so the Ocean Drive looks interesting, but it doesn't sound like that takes very long.

TIA!

I'm pretty sure Newport always tenders. Smaller lines might be able to dock, but the main lines all tender.

The only car company i have found in town is Enterprise. I am having a bit of trouble getting a straight answer on if we can pick up close to where the tenders come in. I'm going to call the local office again Monday and talk to the manager.

If anyone knows another company that is right in Newport proper please let me know. They all seem to be at the airport.

I wouldn't recommend renting a car for Newport. It's often a jammed packed traffic nightmare! Much easier to use public transportation (RIPTA) to get around. Lots of stuff to do close to the dock, or use the trolly to get to the mansions. RIPTA's buses and trolleys in Newport can take you to the mansions, Cliff Walk, shopping centers and more. The one-way fare is $1.50. A 24-hour pass costs $5.00 (for 1 person) and is available on RIPTA buses and trolleys. http://www.ripta.com/programs/index.php?section=30

It's a short walk to the Gateway Visitor Center from the docks. Here you can get a lot of information and bus tickets, or you can get them on the bus. Here's the link to the Visitor's Center site: http://www.gonewport.com/ViewContentPage.aspx?id=464

Here's some info I've put together for Newport that might be of some interest. :)

Newport is a beautiful colonial city, established in 1639, with many things to see and do. The tourism center is within walking distance of the tender landing.

The mansions, which were summer homes for the ultra wealthy, are amazing. Tours are available daily. http://www.newportmansions.org/

Also, the International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum is located in Newport. http://www.tennisfame.com/tennisfame.aspx?pgID=878

Touro Synagogue is the first synagogue built in America. http://www.tourosynagogue.org/

Getting around is easy on your own. There are water taxis and trolley buses available right downtown.

Visiting Fort Adams is a popular tour with beautiful views of the Newport/Pell bridge and the Newport Harbor. You can catch the Jamestown/Newport ferry from downtown Newport to Fort Adams.

Some beautiful photos are had in Newport, RI
