SanNic44 Posted June 21, 2008 #1 Share Posted June 21, 2008 The SS United States now lies pierside in Philadelphia. Not much happening with her. A photo can be seen at http://www.bentpage.wordpress.com. Sorry to see her in this predicament.:(
marinearchit Posted June 23, 2008 #2 Share Posted June 23, 2008 Very sad, but she still looks stately!
sasset Posted June 23, 2008 #3 Share Posted June 23, 2008 PBS here in southern California recently aired a program on the SS United States. These programs seen to repeat and/or air at different times in different markets...check your local listings. Regards
SanNic44 Posted June 23, 2008 Author #4 Share Posted June 23, 2008 Thanks for the note about PBS. Yes, she does look stately but her fate may not be pretty. Given the price of scrap iron and the competition from brand new ships, it doesn't look good.
tvaud Posted June 28, 2008 #5 Share Posted June 28, 2008 I live just down the street from where the SS United States is docked. It is truly sad to see her rusting there, with no purpose. It would be wonderful to see restored to her old glory days, but it's doubtful that this will ever happen. Maybe she could live on as a hotel/casino. There is lots of talk about casinos opening in that area, so I hope an investor will consider this option.

Unfortunately, the Big U may be more valuable as scrap to current owner NCL.
SanNic44 Posted June 30, 2008 Author #7 Share Posted June 30, 2008 The price of scrap iron has more than tripled since the United States was towed into Philadelphia. NCL might sell her to the scrappers yet. I updated my blog with a fantastic panoramic photo of the Lusitania. Incredible shot from way back when.
Barmixer Posted July 8, 2008 #8 Share Posted July 8, 2008 There is a restaurant on The Outer Banks of NC in Nags Head called the Windmill Point. They have the original bar from the SS United States, as well as the largest private collection of SS United States memorabilia. It was a real treat to see it all. http://windmillpointrestaurant.com/
SanNic44 Posted July 28, 2008 Author #9 Share Posted July 28, 2008 Barmixer, That's amazing that they kept the lounge and pieces intact. Only wish the website had better and large photos. Thanks!
