Caribbean Princess Engine Problems

:confused: hi all...we are on the repositioning cruise end october from brooklyn ending in san juan; we have our return arifare already, non refundable of course....and the vacation time cleared at work..now engine problems?? what to do, what to do? and who to contact?

the intinerary is so good, and the price was so right. and we would get to stay in san juan for a few days afterwards...which is one of our favorite places. please keep up the good work with informing us........

don't worry,the ship is still sailing so the problem can't be so severe.They wouldn't run the engines if there's a chance of total loss.Can you imagine what that would cost ? Btw for that reason(your concern) we got insurance.

I think there is an awful lot of speculation and panicking here given the little we know! I still maintain that there were no engine problems on the 5/26 cruise, we hit all ports and were on time for all. Someone from the cruise after has also posted the same. I really don't think it's some big conspiracy on Princess's part. Vibrations occur from time to time.....I noticed it last year (2007) when we had an aft balcony.

 

If the problem is new (which it likely is), it would be hard for Princess to give out much info until they have a chance to evaluate it.

 

Ports can change on a cruise for any number of reasons: weather (avoiding a hurricane, rough seas around a port), political issues, equipment problems, even strikes -- I read recently about a port stop in France that was cancelled because the dock workers were on strike!

 

Cruises should be booked with that thought in mind.....

Yes, it was on the Grand Princess just a week or 2 ago. They went to Dover as a port instead of Paris.

 

I'm on the Caribbean Princess end of Aug this year. We're all watching this thread from our thread. Please keep posting updates. Thanks so much.

 

( I have an aft cabin for the first time and was looking so forward to it)

Thanks everybody for toning things down a bit. It's understandable that Dave is concerned about his daughter, thanks BigGuy for alerting us to the earlier departure, etc etc. We're the couple who are on the Oct. 26 sailing (hi Jeff!) for 3 weeks and will follow this thread thru out the summer - or at least until people start reporting that no problems are occurring on the CB. Everybody just keep an eye on the webcam and then let's start hearing from you lucky people on board. HAPPY TRIP GUYS! Denise

We're on the October 5th sailing for our 10th anniversary. I'm going to enjoy it no matter what happens because there is no changing it now. The only thing I would not like is if the cabins are hot - but we're sailing Canada/New England in October! YEAHHHH. All I ask is that they keep the casino and the bars open.

I am sure it was maybe frightenng to be tossed around at sea in the dark with the thought of a less than perfect engine situation. Try to remember that the captain knows what he is doing and has radar etc. it is not like he was floundering around out in the atlantic looking for lighthouses or anything. Managed to get the ship in in plenty of time, seems as if he knew exactly what he was doing the whole night. Now we wait for the reviews.

Although the ship has 6 engines I believe only 2 of the 6 are tied to propulsion while the other 4 are used to generate power, etc.

 

The CB was scheduled for dry dock this past April which Princess delayed as they wanted to do more upgrading/improvements to the ship than time would allow in the dry dock time slot they had scheduled.

 

Usually engine maintenace is one of tasks taken into consideration when scheduling a dry dock. Much like the maintenance we are supposed to do on our automobile engines at a stated mileage so aren't the diesel engines aboard ship to be maintained at a stated time or nautical miles to prevent some problems. Maybe delaying the engine maintenance resulted in the problem as the current itienirary is over 3,000 nautical miles which is no walk around the park.

We just returned from that sailing. It was indeed a rough sailing. We heard from more than one crew member that there was also a problem with the Stabilizers.

 

Still loved the Cruise however :D

 

Dave,

 

I would tell your daughter not to worry, she will be fine if she can tolerate the rocking. I looked at the web cam several times today and the seas are very rough. I am sure that since the ship is traveling slower than normal, the crew can't fully utilize their stabilizers or it will be slowed down further. It also looks from the web cam like the ship is sailing into the wind.

 

I wish her the best of luck. Tomorrow she will be on dry land!
