Can you spend the night in a port city and rejoin the ship the next day?

Recommended Posts

We will be on a Med cruise that docks in both Livorno and Rome. Can we get off in Livorno, then take the train to Rome and spend the night in Rome instead of getting back on the ship? We would re-join the ship the next day. Has anyone ever done this?

(I guess it would be similar to what would happen if you missed the ship and it left without you...)

Thoughts??

Yes. You need to arrange it ahead of time with RC, but it can definitely be done.

The courteous thing to do would be to do would be to tell the line you are going to miss the ship and rejoin later.

If nothing else than out of courtesy to your fellow passengers who may have to listen to your names being called a million times and possibly holding up the ship.

Just make sure the next port is in the same country as the port you left from (in this case you should be fine). There were a couple of guys on our last cruise who missed the ship in St. Maarten and chartered a flight to Eleuthera (where Princess Cay is) to meet the ship the next day. Unfortunately, they had left their passports in their staterooms when they left the ship in St. Maarten, so they didn't properly clear customs in the Bahamas. A couple of ship's officers met them off the tender from Princess Cay, escorted them to their room to collect their belongings, and promptly flew them back to St. Maarten.

I would probably take them with me, especially if you're going to be moving around from city to city.

The guys in my aforementioned story didn't mean to miss the ship, which is why they left theirs on the ship - they apparently got drunk and fell asleep on the beach, and when they woke up, the ship had already cast off.

I'm reading the posts to date.........and will tell you that we just did this a couple of weeks ago.......got off in Cork (Cobb) and back on in Dublin.

It's not as easy as everyone puts it out to be. The secret to smooth disembarking and embarking is to talk to the air/sea department in Miami and let them know what you want to do.

Why it's their department that takes care of this..........anyway, that is whom you contact.

If you just get off of the ship..........and then want to rejoin it the next day..........security will give you grief..........the Captain may want words......it's a hastle. You will also be giving up your Sea Pass card, and may have to wait awhile while...........the staff makes you wait because you gave them trouble by not showing up at yesterdays embarkation time. The list goes on.

Just a word to the wise!!:)

One other note, Italy has cabotage acts similiar to the US. It's definitely better to make sure it is allowed in advance. I remember a thread from last year where someone missed the ship in Naples and was NOT allowed to reboard the ship at another Italian port.

Wrona is so right with her message.

As well as we know many crew members......when we were getting ready to get off of the ship..........our friends.......who I also had arrainged to disembark with us.........was not on the list.

Fortunately........I had the instructions for disemarkation from Miami, and all secruity had to do was copy the instructions...........and we were on our way.

The next day.......when reboarding the ship.......we were issued new Sea Pass cards........that took a little work before they could work our cabin doors.

If you want to just get off and take your chances........you might just be faced with you luggage packed and given to you at the port that you are trying to reboard. It all has to do with the country you are visiting.

Oh, maybe we shouldn't do it. I will call and see what they say. Thanks so much for everyone's input.

I don't know if you are an experienced cruiser........BTW welcome aboard Cruise Critic.

Don't shy away from something that you would like to do. Call RCCL and ask for the Air/Sea department. Let them know what you want to do. If you move ahead.......ask for the permission to disembark/embark to be sent to you via email.

It's truly that simple. If you get turned down.........it's not because the ship turned you down..........it's because the country that you are visiting has some sort of problem.

If I can be of further help........continue on this thread.

Just keep in mind another major risk. What if for any reason the ship has to miss Civitavecchia (Rome) the following day. Weather there can get really bad so you always take that 50/50 chance that the ship will or will not make it to Rome.

If you're really willing to try this, make sure you set aside enough extra money to fly or travel to another city to meet the ship if it misses Rome.

...and to answer the passport question: ALWAYS have your original passport with you when visiting a foreign country! It will do you no good if it is on the ship.

I just returned Saturday from my Eastern Med/Egypt cruise on the Legend. Our passports were collected when we boarded in Civitavecchia, so if we wanted to take the real thing and not just a copy with us when going ashore, we had to request our passport every time we disembarked. You may have to request your passport when disembarking then return it to Guest Relations when you reboard.

BTW, it was an incredible itinerary, but Europe was experiencing a horrendous heat wave (111 deg F in Rome the day before we came home).

Wow, sorry about the heat. One of my neighbors had advised Italy is hot in the summer time.

Anyway we took Legend of the Seas from Civitavecchia in April to Italy and Croatia, and they didn't collect our passports...

Please call before you decide not to do it. If it's possible, we just want you to be aware that it will take some planning - but it can definitely be worth it to put in the effort.

I really doubt it's 50/50, probably more like 95/5.

We were planning to do this a couple of years ago with Celebrity. When I called and asked prior to the cruise they said no way. Something about the ship starting in Venice and us wanting to get off in Rome then catch up in Livorno. Well when we got on board I asked at customer relations and they said no problem just fill out this paperwork. Well we ended up not doing it but we plan to do exactly this in November as long as they allow it. I will of course ask in advance again but even if they say no I will ask again once on board. Since we are going to be there in November I am not worried about finding a hotel for 1 night.

Also the ship docks in Citi it does not tender. I do not know if I have ever heard of a ship missing a port that it docks at, tender yes. 95/5 even sounds high. More like 99/1.

Of course you can. You are a guest, not a prisoner.

While it may be possible to do this, it also may not. Your response is both rude and incorrect.

For example, you CANNOT do this in the United States. As Wrona stated, other countries have cabotage laws, too.

We just got off the same cruise as momof2 will be on. They did not collect our passports. Pickpockets are an issue in Italy, so we left the originals in our safe and carried color copies of them with us with no problem. They did ask for photo ID at least once when we used a credit card and I used my drivers license with no problem. If you decide to stay, you will need your passport to check into a hotel.

While it will be very hot in Rome, I don't see why there would be a good chance that you should expect not to dock in either Cita/Rome or Livorno.
