FinelyCruising Posted April 10, 2004 #26 Share Posted April 10, 2004 Coffee, napping, wine and cheese, hanging wet bathing suits and towels, taking pictures, watching the sunrise/sunset, counting stars, dreaming into the night. I think I need to add some 'adventure' (... ...) to this list...

cruiselovinfamily Posted April 10, 2004 #30 Share Posted April 10, 2004 We were staying in a AA suite on the Serenade (pier upgrade) - my husband was sleeping outside on the balcony. The woman next door peered over, trying to see into our suite while the lights were on and the drapes were open. Meanwhile, my husband hears her, sits up like a mummy and says "Hello, there!". Well that was the last we saw of that neighbor... until the Mariner of the Seas - Eastern Caribbean RCCL Sun Viking to Western Carib*Oct'81 honeymoon Carnival Tropicale to Mexican Riviera* Sep 1984 NCL Norway to Eastern Carib * Feb 1986 Premier Oceanic to Bahamas(Big Red Boat)* May 2000 RCCL Adventure to Southern Carib * Aug 2002 RCCL Explorer to Eastern Caribbean * Feb 2003 RCCL Radiance to Alaska * Aug 2003 RCCL Serenade to Canada * Sep 2003 RCCL Explorer to Western Carib * Feb 2004 RCCL Mariner to Eastern Carib * Aug 2004 Disney Wonder to the Bahamas * Nov 2004
megalyce Posted April 10, 2004 #31 Share Posted April 10, 2004 HBCruiser, If you initially pack your cameras in a ziplock (drawing out as much air as possible) and continously store them in a ziplock when not in use, it helps to avoid condensation on the lenses when you go from humid outside air to cold, air-conditioned air. I've found it's best to pack it up when you are outside and bring it in Ziplock-ed. Then, give the camera a good 10 minutes or so inside (to cool off) before you take it out again. It sounds strange, but it actually does help. Carnival Imagination 4/00 Holland America Veendam 3/
megalyce Posted April 10, 2004 #32 Share Posted April 10, 2004 ...one more thought... It also works conversely (let your camera warm up outside, before you open the ziplock) The rapid change in temperatures is what causes the moisture buildup on your lens, if your lens is allowed time to acclimate, before exposed to the air, then it will reduce the condensation. Hope this helps. Carnival Imagination 4/00 Holland America Veendam 3/

superjerryw Posted April 10, 2004 #34 Share Posted April 10, 2004 We just use our balcony for mundane stuff like sitting and relaxing and looking at the ocean. Rare TPKeller Posted April 10, 2004 #35 Share Posted April 10, 2004 Meg, Your solution is technically correct, but it doesn't solve the problem. The problem was that they wanted to leave the cabin, and essentially begin using the camera immediately. Lens condensation happens when the temperature of the lens surface is lower than the dew point of the environment in which you are taking pictures. In the tropics, it is very common for the inside-cabin temperature to be lower than the outside dew point. Same exact reason why a glass of iced tea gets wet on the outside! The only way to be able to immediately take pictures outside is to make sure the lens temperature (well, and the rest of the camera too!) is above the outside dew point. Just make sure you don't let the automatic window washing machies come along and drench your equipment! Adventure Girl Posted April 10, 2004 #36 Share Posted April 10, 2004 I sailed on the Adventure of the Seas 10/03 in a group of 8 women. We had 4 balcony cabins all in a row. We all hung out on our balconies and would chat back and forth to eachother. When we were docked in St. Marten, a Holland America Line ship was directly across the pier from us. My sister brought out a "rocket balloon" and blew it up and shot it off of the balcony and it sailed through the air (with a whistle the whole way) and landed on the top deck of the Holland American ship! People out on their balconies on the Holland American ship were laughing and clapping. It was a riot! landshark Posted April 11, 2004 #37 Share Posted April 11, 2004 Not too exciting, but a couple of weeks ago on Holland America's Zuiderdam I had a really bad cough. I felt okay, just couldn't lay down. On my worst coughing night, I couldn't stand it anymore and needed to sit up. The most comfortable sitting spot was out on the balcony. I used my bathrobe for a blanket, put my feet up on the footrest and had earplugs (we were cruising). It was a beautiful night and I got some rest. I might have done it again the next night, but with 27 ft seas and over 50 mph winds, I don't think it would have been as peaceful.
