Tulum on our own?

Our friends did Tulum on our cruise in June (we had already been there so we made it a beach day). They rented a cab for the day. They are glad they did it but felt rushed and didn't have much time to explore. One of them speaks fluent spanish which helped them greatly. It is doable - just make sure you get off on the first tender.

Tulum is an easy one way drive about 90 minutes south of Cancun on a two lane highway. There is not a whole lot to see, but it is definitely worth the trip. It is a breathtaking mayan city on the sea. Once you get there, there are plenty of guides that can be hired for fairly cheap, but pick up a book before you go and tour it on your own. If you stand at one of the far corners, away from the crowds and the ocean and squint your eyes you can get the feel of going back in time. A beautful snorkling spot is in Akumal about 20 miles north of Tulum in the Yal Ku. Another great place to go is Casa Cenote, where you can swim in a cool fresh water cenote, where manatees are said to live and then walk across the street to Gary's Restaurant on the ocean side that serves great food and drinks. Casa Cenote is in Tankah. Hope this helps!

Here is a map of the area that is on Gary's website for Casa Cenote. Please note if you look at his restaurant prices they are in pesos, but dollars are widely accepted.

This will give you a clear picture of locations. Side note...Playa Del Carmen is quite crowded and some of the beaches were topless.

Did you make it to Tulum. We are taking a cruise the end of May and really wanted to make it out there. If you went, can you tell me how you did it. Did you rent a taxi for the day - if so, what did it cost? How long did it take? Did you have any time to enjoy the place or did you have to rush back for the last tender? Any insight into this (by anyone) would be greatly appreciated.

Just wondered if anyone had the answer to this question. We would like to do Tulum on our own and not through the ship, but don't know if the time allows. Has anyone that has sailed on the Sea ever done Tulum on their own?

We have a timeshare in Cancun and we hired our own private guide (someone we have had before) to take friends who traveled with us to Tulum and then Xel Ha on the same day.

There are private companies who do tours of Tulum and Xel Ha on the internet.
This will be my mine and my husband's first cruise. Has anyone done Tulum on their own? We think that we can and save alot of money, any tips, tricks, directions or warnings?? All suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
If you can rent a car and get to Tulum on your own, then check out Edventure Tours in Tulum.

We picked up our guide there and he took us to some places that we never would have found on our own in the limited time we had.

The people at edventure were really nice and it felt like visiting with old friends.

Their email is edventures68@hotmail.com

A taxi from Cancun to Tulum is some serious money! It is approx. $30 to Playa and then $45 to Tulum. That is one way. It is actually more expensive on the return trip for some reason. Do the ship excursion! You have such a limited time in port why waste it on the hassle of traveling to and from?v

I spent a week last year at a resort in the Mayan Riviera and went to Tulum. If you are at Cozumel, take the ferry to Playa Del carmen rather than Cancun-much closer to Tulum. From there, there are 15 passenger vans that run up and down the highway - one comes by every 5 or 10 minutes. There is a van stop in Playa about 4 blocks from the ferry - someone can tell you where to get it. The vans will go all the way to Tulum and the cost - get this is $1.50 per person. In addition to the city, there is a spectacluar view and a beach at Tulum - and for the gals there is a great market just outside the entrance. There are also vans sitting at Tulum that will take you back to Playa to get the ferry back to Cozumel. I believe the ferry is about 40 minutes and $10.
