Viking Sky, European Adventure - Vienna to Amsterdam

:) DH & I just returned July 20th from a wonderful trip on the Viking Sky. Anyone out there with misgivings of sailing with Viking needs to think again! We had a wonderful time, great food, great service, great beer, great wine, great tour guides, GREAT EVERYTHING! Maybe not the most luxurious, but a lot of fun! We met a lot of great people, and will definitely sail with Viking again! If you have any questions feel free to ask.

We also spent 2 days before in Salzburg on our own, which was incredible. We flew into Salzburg, took the train to Vienna and flew out of Amsterdam.

First of all, make sure that you carry a travel umbrella (or 2). In Vienna, you can catch the subway to Stephansplatz which is very convenient. Melk was about a 10 - 15 minute walk to the town, very doable! Nuremberg & Bamberg you definitely need a taxi if you don't come back from town on the bus. I would suggest to stay in town in Nuremberg, then take a taxi back. We didn't have enough time after the excursion in Bamberg to hang around in town before the boat set sail, so we took the bus back from there.

Also, if you are going to Rudesheim and stop in the evening, DON'T eat dinner on the boat as there are too many restaurants that looked like a wonderful place to eat!

Just a few other tips in case this is your first river cruise. If you plan on bringing any beverages back on the boat from in town (wine, beer, soda, etc.), use the bathroom garbage can to ice down your beverages unless you have a small cooler bag that will collapse in your luggage. Not only is bringing local beverages back on board allowed, it was encouraged. The bar staff would always give us empty or ice filled glasses to take to our room. Also, if you have a combination corkscrew/bottle opener, pack it! Also, look in the local grocery store for bottles of wine and beer, they sell the local brew at a fraction of the price (DH bought bottles of beer, .5L, for less than 1 EURO). Also, 1.5L bottles of water for the same, we kept our smaller bottles and refilled them daily.

If either of you care for ice cream, you are in luck!!! There is at least 1 ice cream shop (EIS), 1 bakery & and 1 bar on almost every block.

Any more questions, just ask!:)
