Anyone done a repositioning cruise?

Hi,

I have been on several repositioning cruises and they are always my favorites. I did the full transit like Largin mentioned and it was very special as it was the Dawn's inaugural cruise. They stop at rare ports of call. I have taken several Trans Atlantic crossings. I prefer westbound since you get 25 hour days. My next cruise in August, is a crossing and we will be visiting some very unusal ports including Iceland and Greenland which I have already visited twice. They are incredible. The price of the cruise and air can be a bargain. Give it a try!

we've done two -- both were three day, from LA to Vancouver then back the following spring.

Price is always great. I've written a review on both. Let me know if you want to see the link to the review.

The one thing I've noticed about the repos is lots of the little things are missing. But it is sure a great way to get away for a couple of days.

Yes, two:

22-day, Ocean Princess (San Juan - Vancouver) got engaged after dinner (formal) the night we left Cartagena.

49-day, Regal Princess (Bangkok - San Francisco) honeymoon cruise.

My husband and I hv done several repositioning and like them very much -- we are on the Sapphire 9/20 from Vancouver to LA, then staying onboard for another week to Mexico. We have done this before - but did Mexico first, then stayed on board to Vancouver. Two years ago we were on the Grand Princess from Barcelona to Ft Lauderdale. This was a wonderful trip - we were afraid it would getting a little cool - but was 80-85 deg., smooth as silk all the way across. Had a little excitement with a "man overboard" with lifeboat deployed, etc. - it turned out to be false alarm - but was quite exciting (better than bingo). Crew did a wonderful job - they didn't know it was a false alarm.

What little things are missing? My first Princess cruise is a repo coming up this September on the Sapphire and I assume I will get the full Princess experience. Or was it because you were on a 3-day itinerary? This one is 7-days.

I previously did a repo on RCI and thought it was great. I love the value of the repos.

My DW and I have done one repositioning voyage, and have three more scheduled.

the one alreay completed was the repositioning and renaming of the NCLA pride of hawaii. it was from Hawaii to LA. It was typical NCLA, Bad. Not because of the ship, but the staff could not have cared less if the guests were having a good time.

we have three more coming up

2008-2009 full transit of the panama canal LA to FLL - Coral Princess

TransAtlantic from Barcelona to Miami, - Oceania Regatta

2010 Coastal from LA to Vancouver (this one was just posted by princess

Go for it. :)

We hvn't noticed anything missing on these repo cruises. Hv always found them to be excellent values, usually better priced that the regular routes, although these coastal cruises are always well supported by Canadians and So. Californians. Our continued gripe with Princess is their terrible coffee (made from concentrated syrup). We are from Seattle so are fussy about our coffee. Hv brot our perc. in the past, particularly when we do the longer cruises. By the way, noticed that you are from Edmonton - my husband lived there as a child and went to school there. Perhaps we'll see you on board ( don't hv our assignment yet on this way - just the 2nd cruise)

here is a link to my review of my Sept repo from Vancouver to LA

little things are missing, like not many channels on the TV with shows (who cares not watching tv)

no lobster or crab legs (maybe will be on 7 day)

no ports (ha ha, but yours will)

more of a party atmosphere (good or bad, depending)

feels like ship is in transition and crew is waiting for the "real" cruise to start

no "big" production show

but they do have great food, great staff, casino, shows, sun, drinks, relaxation and great company

I am trying to talk hubby into going on the Sept 22 repo, we'll see

On their website look under repostioning when looking for a cruise. RCI has them listed that way. We did one from Boston to Ft. Lauderdale loved it. It was 12 days. Looking into a full Panama Canal transit from San Diego to Miami in '09!!

Sam,

Princess doesn't list them as "repositioning", they list them based on itinerary ie: our TransAtlantic was listed under Europe and my parents TransPacific was listed under Asia.

I repositioned on the Golden last September from Vancouver to Los Angeles. It was my first Princess cruise and I enjoyed it very much. Since it was 7 day cruise, I found the experience to be very good. We did have lobster one night. Originally, we were supposed to stop in San Diego for the last day of the cruise and then they substituted Catalina. That was a terrible waste of and I wasn't happy with that arrangement. Also, the ship stops in Astoria, where I've visited many times and could not understand the reason for that stop either. Not much there to see. The best thing is going down the road to Canon Beach to see the art galleries and get a semi decent meal in a tourist trap restaurant. Don't mean to sound negative because I really enjoyed the cruise but I think the choice of ports could have been better. Victoria and San Francisco were fabulous, but they are always fabulous cities to visit.

The price is very good on these cruises so I wouldn't hesitate to go again. I notice this year they are including San Diego as a stop. Sure hope it does this year. In the Spring, they are going to stop in Santa Barbara for a day. Now that's also a great place to spend the day.

Thanks.

David

Hi,

There is a major difference from a coastal repositioning and a longer transit crossing. On the longer voyages, you receive lobster and crab legs and sometimes on twice. Special desserts can also be presented such as cherries jubilee and others. Special shows can be inserted that are put on randomly by the crew. Many times, there are many days at sea and you are very entertained. Price, different/unusual ports are my main considering on chosing a repo cruise. Yours, being a 7 day cruise you will receive the same things that a routine 7 day Alaska or Caribbean cruise would provide.

i have been on the star, diamond and sapphire. Both three-day (a great introduction to cruising or a great long weekend!) and 6 & 7-day pacific coastal crusies. the 7 day DID have 2 production shows (which i wish would change more often by the way), we DID have crab legs AND lobster. (lobster night was the same, they seem to be scrimping on the crab this past May on the diamond). we've stopped on our 7 day in san diego, santa barbara, san francisco and (anyone know why?) astoria, oregon. then to victoria and vancouver. i didn't notice a difference in the 6 or 7 day than on an alaska cruise.

i do somewhat get the impression on the 3day that the staff 'was waiting for the real cruise to start', but we still had a wonderful time. even on the short trip there was a production number and crab legs (my favourite).

WE love them ... lots of wonderful sea days...and have been lucky with good weather on all. And it's wonderful to only have to fly one reallly long plane trip, as we live in Florida. Last year did ---

EMERALD PRINCESS Venice>FLL.

This past April/May sailed SAPPHIRE from Sydney, Australis to Los Angeles.

Oct. '08 will sail Montreal>FLL and in May '09 FLL>Montreal on HAL's MAASDAM

Nov. '08 GRAND PRINCESS Rome>FLL

Feb. '09...not a repositioning, but B2B (so no flights) FLL>Manaus>FLL

Did Capetown>Buesnos Aires on MARCO POLO back in '97, but it was part of a longer cruise, not strictly a repo.

We do 2 transatlantics a year, and also look for other repositioning (recently did one on Azamara from South America to Fl). We do find differeences on these cruises (with any line) and they are all good (at least for us). The passengers tend to be a bit older, better traveled, and there are very few kids. We also find that we seldom have to fight for deck chairs. We finally figured out that many on these cruises are retired (including me) and live in sunbelt states, so they have no interest in the sun. On our recent 20 day Grand Princess transatlantic, we could walk up to the pool deck anytime and find decent seats.
