i'm on the middle bit from Southampton, and I beleive most of the prots you can walk off the boat/tender into the various towns. The Rome trip, however, involves a 90 minute coach trip to get to Rome.

Rome is so so easy to do independently! And really cheap as well. We did this just a few days ago!

The ship docks at Civitavecchia, about an hour or so from Rome. It's a 15-20 minute walk to the railway station. Take the free shuttle bus or a taxi. The trains are frequent and fast and the round trip fare is just 9 Euros! Get off the train at San Pietro (St.Peter's) which is about four stops before the main Termini. Walk round the corner to the Vatican Museums and the Basilica. With the aid of a street map you can easily walk to the Piazza Navona, the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, The Forum and the Colliseum. You can then walk across to the main Termini for the train back to Civitavecchia.
