Previous cruises: Carnival Victory, Voyager of the Seas(twice), QM2, Norwegian Spirit, Crown Princess, Norwegian Dawn.

Our party consisted of my wife and I (both in our early 50s), our 20 year old son and our 15 year old son. We had an ocean view quad cabin.

This cruise was part of a two week vacation which included driving to Florida from NJ. we also visited Silver Springs, spent 4 days at Disney, one day at The Holy Land Experience and a day at the Kennedy Space Center.

We arrived in Tampa on Wednesday evening July 9 staying at the Comfort Inn near the airport. As a side note, by staying at Comfort Inns throughout our trip we earned $100 in gas cards taking the sting out of driving down. The hotel was only two blocks from Steinbrenner Field so we walked over and saw a game between the Tampa Bay Yankees and the Port St. Lucy Mets. Mets won, Yeah! Go Mets!! It is always great to see the Yankees lose, especially to the Mets :-)

EMBARKATION: A

After breakfast at the hotel we left for the port at 10:30 A.M. Arrived at 10:45 and dropped off our luggage. You can then drive across the street and park yourself for $12 per night in advance (cash or credit) or you can use a valet service at extra cost which seemed silly to us since the garage was so close. Check in was quick and easy and we were in group 4 for boarding. By 11:30 boarding started and by 11:45 we were at the buffet. After a nice lunch we took the tour of the ship led by Shawn a member of the cruise director’s staff. Shawn was terrific on the tour and throughout the cruise.

DINING: A+

In my humble opinion Carnival has the best food at sea. The buffet area is laid out well. There were never long lines. The deli has a wonderful Ruben sandwich, the pizza is terrific and available 24 hours as is the soft ice cream. Iced tea, lemonade, fruit punch and milk are readily available. My sons decided there was no need for a soda card.

Breakfast in the buffet was basically the same as in the dining room. When in port we ate breakfast in the buffet. On sea days it was more relaxing to order in the dining room.

We ate lunch one day in the dining room. I’d highly recommend the grilled trout. You can check the menu before you enter. Breakfast and lunch are only served in the Mardi Gras dining room.

There are two dining rooms serving the same meals: the Carnivale and the Mardi Gras, named for Carnival’s first ships. Since our cabin was aft, we were assigned the Carnivale Dining Room. We ate all our dinners in the dining room, usually ordering 2 or 3 entrees each since it was so hard to choose. The baby back ribs, prime rib, lobster, and steaks were all wonderful. Our waiters remembered that our sons wanted milk and chocolate milk each night and it was always there without ordering after the first night. It was sometimes difficult to get more than one roll at dinner. On the last night make sure you order the crab cake appetizer. It is outstanding. desserts are basic, but good. My 15 year old had the chocolate melting cake each night with an extra scoop of ice cream. We were seated with a multi generational family of 7 so there were 11 total at our table.

CABIN: B

At 1:30 P.M. cabins were ready. We were in Empress 195, an ocean view quad. Carnival cabins tend to be larger than other cruise lines cabins so there was plenty of room. This cabin must have been converted to a quad when the ship was refurbished this past winter. The fold down beds were not in the ceiling as we’ve seen on other ships, but were built into frames against the wall that were added to the room. As part of the upgrades Viewsonic flat screen TVs were installed on the wall. After a few days with this TV, I would never consider a Viewsonic. You had to stand up to get a good viewing angle. Otherwise the screen was dark and hard to see. Our table mates at dinner felt the same way. The channel selection included a number of on ship movie channels, the typical cruise information channels, TBS, CNN and all major networks using local stations from Denver. Why Denver, I do not know, but that worked for us when on Sat afternoon Fox from Denver carried the Rockies/Mets game. And the Mets won :-) The bathroom is roomy enough with a basket of various toiletries on the sink. the shower dispenser had shampoo and conditioner but was not labeled as to which was which. We had trouble getting cold water in our sink. Often our choice was hot or hotter. Two robes are provided as well as beach towels for all occupants. there was a safe that you operate using you credit card. There was no fridge. We met our cabin steward once, but never really needed to see him again. Rooms were cleaned very late morning throughout the ship. Towel annimals were provided each evening.

SHOWS: B

Typical cruise entertainment. The singers and dancers do a respectable job, but nothing special. The Paris Lounge was not really built to be a theater. Shows started 15 to 30 minutes late each evening as they kept selling bingo cards and play bingo before the shows. Kenny Miller was one of the best comedians I’ve seen on a ship. Diane Ford was one of the lamest, using old church bulletin jokes that have been used by pastors over 20 years ago. The magician started out weak with basic ring illusions but finished really strong, so stay for the whole show. Risa, our cruise director was OK but nothing stood out. On the other hand her staff was outstanding so she must be doing something right.

ACTIVITIES: B

There’s lots to do on this ship if you’d like to keep busy, but there is ample opportunity to do nothing if you so choose. Typical activities included ice carving, the hairy chest contest, towel folding, dance classes, karaoke and trivia competitions. Do take the galley tour. Always a fascinating option.

The midnight Buffet is always a don’t miss. Bring your camera. Picture taking is from 11:30 to midnight. Then eating at midnight. There was also a midnight Mexican buffet one night and a bathrobe deck party on another. We enjoyed the slides in the water park area. If you go when it first opens at 10 A.M. there are shorter lines, if any. The pool was always crowded but deck chairs were plentiful. Mini golf was also fun. We played each night right after dinner. You need to check out the equipment and return it to a kiosk by the pool. It would be more convenient if this was set up nearer to the mini golf which is located on the top deck in the front of the ship. There were two ping pong tables, a jogging track, shuffle board and a large deck chess set. Our 15 year old loved club O2 and spent much of his time there. Our 20 year old was disappointed that the Inspiration did not have a basketball court and spent much of his time at trivia contests.

COZUMEL: B

If you like shopping, you will like Cozumel. Do bargain. It is expected. We did the clear kayak and snorkeling excursion which was wonderful. We were taken by taxi to the beach for the excursion where we spent 45 minutes in the clear kayaks, 45 minutes snorkeling, and some tome relaxing in beach chairs while eating the provided fruit and enjoying the complimentary beverages. A pool was also available. Provided taxis returned us to the dock area. Remember that ship’s time is different from port time. The Inspiration stays on Eastern time while Cozumel is in the central time zone.

THE SHIP ITSELF: A

The Imagination was refurbished this pas year and is in terrific shape, If you are on the Empress Deck you are on deck 7 (7 letters in Empress). if you are on the Atlantic Deck you are on deck 8 (8 letters). if on the Promenade, deck 10 (10 letters). This doesn’t work for the other decks. The Atrium and buffet areas are decorated with lots of neon in black and purple. Strange, but you only spend limited time in these areas and the rest of the ship is very tastefully decorated. We did not use the coffee bar, piano bar or casino. There were very few announcements during the day. The crew is friendly and serve well but don’t other to remember your name even though there is a question about it on the comment cards. The Gulf was like glass and the cruise was calm throughout. Overall this was a wonderful cruise. Carnival knows how to do things right.

DISEMBARKATION: A

We chose to do the self assist since we had only 3 bags for the four of us. The ship arrived at Tampa while we slept. After an early breakfast in the dining room we gathered our luggage and when the ship was cleared we were quickly off. By 7:45 A.M. we were in our mini van and by 9:15A.M.. we were checked into our room at Disney and ready to start 4 days of crowds, waiting in line, and fun, but that’s a totally different review.

I read your review out on that usenet site the other day and was going to post but there are so many trolls over there I didn't.

I wanted to mention that the upper bunks in the older ships have never pulled down from the ceiling. They were always fold up against the wall type beds. So these were not added during the refurb.

I'll be going on the Inspiration in November and was happy to read you had a good time and liked the ship.

Thanks for the great review. I will be on the Inspiration 8/25 and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they have done with the remodeling, it sounds wonderful.

You didn't mention Grand Caymen, didn't you stop there? I'm just curious because we are still trying to decide what to do there.

Thanks again,

Kathy

The Inspiration has two cruises... the Grand Cayman is an extra day longer than the one that stops just in Cozumel.

in any case the Stingray experience in GC is terrific as well as the tour that does the stingrays, the turtle farm and Hell.

enjoy

Thanks for the very complete review. We will be on the Inspiration in March - too far away! I was curious about the tour of the ship you mentioned at embarkation. I have only been on one cruise - the Holiday - but I don't remember any ship tours being available. Is this routine? Thanks.
