JannieAnne Posted August 2, 2008 #1 Share Posted August 2, 2008 Will be in Zakinthos 0800-1600 on Oct 9 08. Should we take the ship's shore excursion or can we do something ourselves?? We can choose from: 1.Bohali, Sigourous Ceramic Workshop, Saint Marinas; or 2. Zakinthos Town, Bohali, Monastery of Anafonitria, Volimes Preferences anyone??? Or is there much to do in the port area? C&Sun Posted August 14, 2008 #2 Share Posted August 14, 2008 Absolutely nothing in the town to do. We were there on a Sunday morning in October 07 on QE2. Garbage piled all over the sides of the street. By the time we got off the ship at 10am, most of the people on our cruise who had walked into town, only 5 mintue walk from dock, were already returning to the ship. Our tablemates took the ship's tour to the monastary. Said it was o.k. but not impressive. Can't figure out why cruise ships go here!

kate52 Posted August 14, 2008 #4 Share Posted August 14, 2008 We have just come back from a cruise calling at Zakynthos- I actually thought it was quite a pretty town!! Certainly the waterfront is! We just took a taxi to the beach, water was really clear and warm. Some people went to Smuggler's Cove/ Shipwreck beach for snorkelling, they said it was a bit crowded. kate
Rare Hlitner Posted August 14, 2008 #5 Share Posted August 14, 2008 Its funny how different folks can have different memories of the same place. We went to this island while on a week yacht cruise (20 passengers) out of Corfu. One morning we pulled up at Shipwreack Beach, jumped off the boat and swam into this absolutely gorgous beach. This is the greek islands with sun, sand, and natural beauty. Its funny how some folks love the Greek Islands and others can't seem to find anything to do. Perhaps that is the charm. Kevbirch Posted August 15, 2008 #7 Share Posted August 15, 2008 Zakinthos (also known as Zante) is an Island where you can really soak up the local way of life. There's a quiet little hamlet just up the coast from Zakinthos Town called Tsilivi (pronounced without the 't' at the front with some great tavernas where you can inexpensively sample the local cuisine and wines. There is also a well known turtle reserve at Lagana (warning its a 'bit' lively in the evenings) or if you on the island at dusk, why not dine out at 'Sunset Taverna' where you get good food with great scenery.
