What is that little door thing that is open while docked?

What is that little door thing that opens up near the front of the ship while it is docked in port.

 

I have always wondered this, just never asked.

 

It can be seen in this picture. I'm too lazy to edit it and circle it, but I am sure you can see it.

Not certain but I would say it is for the crew, so they can see when casting the mooring lines ashore, as the lines appear to be exiting from the same deck forward of the hatch. Any more suggestions ? no prize for the winner, sorry!!!

It's the exterior platform which the crew uses to moor the ship.

Due to the sharp, inward angle of the bow, the crew is able to more clearly see what is below the bow of the ship, while approaching the pier. On the older ships (without the doors/platforms), an officer would have to hang out over the side of the bow to see what was directly below them. I saw them do this several times on the older ships, and thought at the time that it was a very unsafe practice.

That would be the exit door of the "naughty" room. We who smuggle are made to walk the plank....doesn't seem to teach us a lesson though!!
