Photo id for drinks on board?

After a scintillating afternoon at the DMV, where I exchanged an out-of-state license, I realize now that my only government photo ID is my passport, and the new license won't arrive in time for my cruise. Do I have to drag my passport around the ship every time I want a drink or is something like a work photo id enough? Doesn't the S&S card have an age printed on it anyway?

You wont have to take your passport around the ship with you. Your S & S card has the information if needed by the bartenders.

You may need to bring your passport into port with you as some ports may require you to show a photo id with your S & S card to enter the pier area.

Just out of curiosity. If the DMV took your old license in order to give you a new one what are you driving with now?

Yeah... it does... it's flags those under 21 and no alcohol will be sold to them. They're pretty darn strict about it...

If you look too young to drink alcohol, the bartenders will ask you for I.D. The only thing they will accept is government issued.... If you have no driver's license with a photo, then you'll need to take your passport...or not drink. While your S&S card has your age imprinted, it's easy to try to use someone elses card to purchase alcohol. They're strict about it, too.

I get a folded up piece of paper until the new one comes in the mail.

I think you'll be fine. I'm in my late 20's but I look younger (or so people seem to think), so I constantly get carded when I go out around here. However, I've never been carded on a cruise ship, including Carnival.

My daughter in law looks 16 lol and she always gets carded too. But never ever on a cruise.

OP you will be fine.....

My daughter is 23 and has had to carry her ID with her on every cruise since. On the last cruise we bought some wine and the waiter made her get her ID from the cabin before he would pour her a glass. Others have said they have not had a problem but my daughter has been on 4 different ships since she turned 21 and has been asked for ID for drinks and to get into the disco at night. They are really strict with entrance to the disco. My daughter always gets so mad when she forgets to carry it and they won't serve her. Another trip to the cabin. Cindy

My son is 22 and was carded, but only when he got drinks at the Past Cruisers Party or the Captain's Cocktail Party, and I guess that was just because they didn't use the S&S card. Of course, when he purchased a drink with his S&S there was never an issue.

My son was carded in the casino, everytime a new person saw him they asked for a picture ID. He had to carry his DL with him at all times. After about 3 days the casino staff got to know him and left him alone.

This question makes me curious. I am 21, but some may say I don't look it. Heck, I'll even say it. It really would be a huge inconvenience to have to carry around my ID as well. Are there no 21 stamps like at the bars:cool: ?

They don't usually for drinks, but they do ask for ID to get into the disco after 11.

This is an excellent point!! Most people probably never give this a thought but it can become an issue. My son's were both asked for their photo id's on their first cruise. They were 19 and 21 at the time. When we cruised last month on the Valor my 22 year old had forgotten his photo id at home. We had his passport but I didn't want him to be carrying around the ONLY photo id we had for him esp if he was going to be out having "fun". I went to the pursers desk and asked if there was a way to get around this since he enjoyed the disco after 11pm. We were told that if security asked for his photo id that he was to tell them that the purser's desk said to run his S&S card and he'd be fine. It worked and I was glad since I had all of our passports locked in the safe in my cabin.

Now as far as being asked for a photo id to buy booze again the S&S card was the only thing required and neither of my two sons was asked for a photo id. When my youngest who is 20 hadn't shaved for a couple of days they served him without batting an eye at the captains party. When we went to the past guest party he had just shaved and the server asked my dh if it was ok to give him a drink.

The key to this is to use your S&S card. Once they scan it they know you are 21 and you won't have any issues. At the captain's party you may have to bring your id if you don't look 21 but at the bars you should be fine.

You S&S card should be all telling. I traveled with my 19 yr old and ordered a drink at the bar before realizing I didnt' have my S&S card... I (at 37... I ordered the drink) then realized I didnt have my card and tried to use hers and they wouldnt sell to me... I had to go back to the room to get mine to purchase a drink.

He was only 18, but looks about 15. We sail in 2 days, so it will be interesting how often he gets carded. Still looks about 15. Don't tell him I said so, he will appreciate it when he is 40.

I just got off the Imagination today. I was sitting next to someone at the Mexican on-deck party when he and his girlfriend were both asked for ids at the the lido deck bar. Neither had it on them and were told to go get it if they wanted to buy a drink. Their S & S card wasn't enough.
