There is not much left of the Norway.....

I heard a really interesting lecture on the Norway recently by a ocean liner enthusiast. He said that when NCL finally sold the Norway it HAD to announce that the new owners would refurbish her, because if they said she was being sold for scrap they would have first had to remove all asbestos and other environmental hazards, which would have cost millions. So they had to make it look like she was being sold to someone who would refurbish her, then have the new owners appear to change their minds. He also said that NCL really wanted to refurbish her and keep her afloat after the explosion, but the costs of complying with various new environmental, safety, etc., regulations became prohibitive.

He also said that NCL bought the SS United States solely to keep her from competing with POA on the Hawaii route (she was the only other ship registered in the US and therefore the only competition). She's been declared some kind of national historic landmark, and if she is restored she must be restored to her original condition--a prohibitive cost. So she will probably continue to rust in Philadelphia until NCL can find a way to tow her away to India without causing an uproar.

Very sad indeed.

We sailed on the SS Norway on our Honeymoon in June 1981. It was the first anniversary cruise of the SS Norway. The ship was BEAUTIFUL. Everything was shiny and new from front to back, top to bottom.
