3% fee in casinos - read & contribute if you JUST got back from a cruise

Recommended Posts

According to the cashier in the casino on the Liberty tonight, ALL ships started charging 3% last week to get money in the casino.

If you have JUST returned from a cruise that left August 16th or later, please describe your experience here.

Is this woman's assertion correct? Is it now truly fleet-wide?

What is the 3% fee being charged for?

The casinos on those ships are just as tight as Las Vegas. There was a machine on the last cruise we took, where a stack of cash bills were forcibly pushed against a metal strip along the side of the machines, which made it impossible to be pushed by a bunch of quarters to 'win' the stack.

What are they adding the 3% to?

In order to get a cash advance in the casino for gambling, you must have a credit card on file with your account card. The ship passes the 3% credit card transaction fee on to you.

Credit card companies charge merchants and vendors a fee when you use your credit card. Most places even things out buy upping their prices (Ever bought gas at a "cash or credit" station and noticed that the credit price is higher? Same thing).

I guess RCI decided to stop eating this charge and began passing it on to the cardholder. Too many people were abusing the privilege...and using the casino as a person ATM cash withdrawl and not actually gambling with the money.

Many ships have been charging for years. RCI simply caught up.

Gotcha! NCL did this when I cruised in April and I'm surprised that it's not an industry-wide practice. Looks like it's headed that way.

We always cruise RCL but last Thanksgiving took a Carnival Cruise with friends. Carnival charged the 3% for the cash at the Casino and my husband was not happy. Me? Just part of doing business. Kind of like an ATM type surcharge. Not really that big of a deal. I mean, I would rather pay 3% to take out some money in the Casino than have them continue to cut back on the service like they have been doing. JMO.

I know they charge the 3% at the casino cage, but do they also charge the 3% when you get chips at a table???

Can you get chips at a table on RCCL with your sign and sail card? My experience has been that I had to use cash at the tables to get chips. If that's the case, I seriously doubt they'll add an extra 3% to the cash-for-chips exchange. However, if your table luck is like mine, you'll be giving back much more than 3% while playing. ;)

We were on Legend a couple of years ago and used our sea pass to get tokens for the slot machines, is this what they are charging the 3% for? That's not cash so do people get the tokens and then cash them in? Am I being stupid or just an innocent?

On the August 18th Monarch sailing, we asked at the tables and the dealer said that anything charged to the Seapass would indeed be subject to the 3 percent charge. That wasn't the case on our May Mariner cruise. I will ask again on my September Sovereign cruise.

They don't use tokens for slot machines anymore. Just cash.

This is all about people who take the money from the casino and are using their RCCL BOA credit card, to get the double points on their card. If this is what they're doing fleet-wide, so be it. Works for me, as we will be in the Casino much less as we have to bring the $ from home instead of getting it from the cage. Slots are ridiculously tight on NOS...they will see their casino revenue drop...but I will definately keep more $ in MY POCKET!!!

It looks like we'll have to suffer the 3% charge then because I really haven't got the time (or inclination) to change money up to dollars after having had a nightmare with the bank sorting out the euro's. We limit outselves to £10 a night in the casino so for a 10 night cruise it'll only cost an extra £6, but it is a shame that the greedy ones spoil it for everybody else!
