Least smoking on board

Hi, We just returned from our very first cruise ever July 20th on the Disney Magic doing the Mexican Riviera cruise. We had the best time ever and my son is already planing for our next cruise. Due to the cost I told him we might try a Carnival or Royal Caribbian cruise line next time. Now I know there was no gambling on the Disney which was great since I never win anyway. The best part was not smelling any cigarett smoke anywhere on the ship. Does anyone know which other cruise lines also tend to have no smoking in the insde areas?? My son has my nose and we can smell a smoker on the freeway in our car if they are driving ahead of us. Which cruise line is the best for non smokers? I figure the gambling room on the ships allow smoking, but is it ventalated enough so the smell does not filter around the rest of the ship. We really do not like that old ash tray smell that lingers in casinos which is why I have not been back to Las Vegas since 1976. We did try Reno in 2006 but my son hated that smoke smell when we walked thru a couple of casinos. He has not wanted to return there since. So does anyone have any recomendations on which cruise lines are best for non-smokers?? Thanks

Nora

My son is exactly the same, he is 10 and absolutely hates it. I would be interested to know if anyone else know the answer to this.

Saying that though, we sailed HAL 2 years ago and I can't remember smelling smoke, only when we walked through the closed casino one afternoon!

It might be better to post this on the general board, rather than on the roll call board? xxx

Nora, we have sailed with many cruise lines and Disney is the best for non-smokers. The Carnival Paradise used to be a completely non-smoking ship (even on deck) but they stopped that. I am not sure why. We sailed her a couple of times and loved it. Perhaps they had trouble selling her out when it was non-smoking. So, if it is no smoking inside that you want, stick with Disney.

Oceania allows smoking only in one room on the ship and it is easy to maneauver around. They do not allow smoking in any public rooms or cabins or balconies on the ship.

Just one area near the pool.

Price is similiar to Disney but not child friendly ships they are great for non-smokers.

We have been cruising on the smaller ships where they do control smoking like Oceania, Azamara, Crystal. Nothing like a balcony when someone smokes 600 feet away and does not realize smell travels.

Carnival used to have a non-smoking shp but quit about 8 years ago, to afarid to keep it up, I went and enjoyed it though one young boy was kicked off for having a cigarette and father went off with him while mother and sister continued cruise. Price was way cheap I think I paid $329 for a week. That was in the safe times- pre 9-11.

Good Luck. 60+ cruises 4 booked next year and leaving next week for Xmas cruise.

We recently sailed on the Azamara Quest and it had the least smoke smell of any ship I've sailed on to date and I have a very sensitive nose. They only allow smoking in one corner of the observation lounge and in one corner of the pool deck. This is not ship geared for children however.

I believe Celebrity is going to be your best bet. They recently enacted very rigid smoking restrictions - no smoking at all in cabins or balconies, no smoking in most indoor spaces, no smoking in the CASINOS even, and only a few outdoor spaces for smokers.

Regent also enacted strict smoking restrictions, but since you mentioned price is an issue, they are probably out of the range. They are a luxury cruise line, and are significantly more expensive than Disney, and are definitely not geared for children.

Azamara and Oceania also have great no-smoking policies, but they are "premium" cruise lines, and while their prices are generally less than Regent, they are closer to, or even higher than Disney. Plus, they are not known for their children's programs.

Celebrity, RCI, Carnival, Princess, HAL, and NCL cruise lines are mass-market lines that may be more what you're looking for price-wise, and all have children's programs...but of all the mass-market lines, Celebrity has the most rigid smoking restrictions. In fact, if you check out the Celebrity forum, most days you can find a few threads in there with smokers raging in anger over these newly-enacted restrictions - especially about the casino. Most of these threads get deleted, though, when the raging gets too hot. ;)

Celebrity also has a great children's program.

I second the opinion that Celebrity is your best bet if you are looking for a cruise line that has very restrictive smoking policies and that is cheaper than Disney. Celebrity ships don't quite have the activities that Royal Caribbean or Disney have for children, but if your child is fairly mature, there should be enough that they enjoy the cruise. You especially may want to look into the Solstice Class which is more likely to have appeal to children. Celebrity has become my favorite cruise line.

I'm keeping a close eye on Celebrity. It sounds like they still allow smoking in the forward observation lounge, so that makes them a non-starter for me. But, if they change that...

Meanwhile, NCL bans smoking in all public interior areas except the casino and (obviously) cigar room. I'm not a gambler, so that scheme has worked very well for me. Unfortunately, they still allow smoking in cabins, so you will no doubt encounter smoke and/or odor in the hallways. The cabins themselves are invariably well cleaned.

Celebrity has the strickest smoking rules. Go to their website & scroll down to smoking policy.
