Immigration inspection - QM2 cruise calling at New York

Sorry to ask some more about this but I have read that inspection takes place on board sometimes and other times ashore. I predict it will be more comfortable to be inspected on board as there will be places to sit and decks will be allocated times to attend and it can be done in advance of arriving in New York as opposed to joining a queue after leaving the ship in New York and wanting to spend as much time ashore as possible - but I could be wrong. Do officials travel on board these days to do the inspection during the voyage to New York?

Can anyone shed any light on this for me please?

I shall be travelling from Southampton back to Southampton June/July 2009 on the 17 night voyage calling at NY, Halifax Nova Scotia, Boston, NY and I am from the UK.

thank you
