avalon1025 Posted September 26, 2008 #102 Share Posted September 26, 2008 Hi all, My office is just across the street from the Star in dry dock, her lifeboats are removed, she is in the dry dock, but has not yet been lifted out of the water. For those of you interested, the Ramp and the park both on Terry Francois blvd. are the best areas to get close to the ship. THis is all behind the ballpark. Enjoy! crusdiva Posted September 27, 2008 #104 Share Posted September 27, 2008 Hi all, There's another thread about the Star dry-dock that has been updated today by Cruise me Twice with this picture. Thought I'd post it here:
Rare abbydancer2003 Posted September 27, 2008 #105 Share Posted September 27, 2008 We left for Florida today (writing this from my room at Disneyworld) and I was on the right side of the plane (the left side) to see the Star on our way out. Very cool as she will be the next ship we'll be on - hopefully in May.

Scout all three before deciding where to go. Link to Mission Rock: http://www.kellysmissionrock.com/ /Sultan OMG! My parents rented out the back deck at Mission Rock for my college graduation party about a hundred years ago! (Actually the mid-80s.) And I have many fond memories of The Ramp too. Both were far "funkier" back then. Thanks for the blast from the past Sultan! We really wish we could move back to SF, but that would mean we'd have to give up cruising! Travelrd Posted September 27, 2008 #107 Share Posted September 27, 2008 i remember great afternoon lunches at mission rock upstairs on the deck and beautiful views of the harbor on those clear days. it was much more low class industrial in the late 70s and early 80s and the last time i went back, about 8 years ago, the place was basically the same but the neighborhood was more upscale. wish i could be sitting on deck, enjoying a great cheeseburger and fires and watching the star!!!! thanks for the picture

sultan_sfo Posted September 27, 2008 #109 Share Posted September 27, 2008 You guys have made me nostalgic. The upstairs open deck was a gathering place for whoever showed up from our group for Sunday brunch. One of us always brought along a Sunday paper which we passed around as we talked! Now I have to take a cruise to have brunch on a deck. Old Mission Rock closed down many years ago and then it was remodeled by the new owner. DW and I will go down this weekend to either Ramp or Mission Rock to see the Star which was our first cruise ship -- got both of us hooked to cruising. vickie_bernie Posted September 27, 2008 #112 Share Posted September 27, 2008 Wanted to say thanks for all the info on the refurbishment... and I will assume that many of us are sailing on her in October. Just seeing the pictures of her in SF get me all excited with anticipation. I am looking forward to when the first group sails on her after the refurbishment so we can actually see or read what it looks like.
SFParrtHd Posted September 27, 2008 #113 Share Posted September 27, 2008 No. Our group never made it there. Does it still exist? This is turning into a SF thread! /Sultan Yes, it was moved over to Pier 39 in 1978/79. Stayed "original" until the original owners sold it in 1983. senior lady Posted September 27, 2008 #117 Share Posted September 27, 2008 Hey Marilyn.......... since your going to be on the Star before us. Can you let us know how many formal nights and when they are?? Roy & I have decided to do one formal night on this cruise, so we'll save room in our luggage not having to pack a suit, tux, and sports jacket etc. If we know when they are we can decide what night. It's getting exciting with all the changes on the ship Have a great weekend
CruiseKing Posted September 27, 2008 #118 Share Posted September 27, 2008 Hi Karen, Sharon & I have found 2 formal nights on a 10 day. The first is usually the second night, Captain's Welcome Dinner. Not sure on the second. Also the cruise answer book states 7-13 days 2 formal nights.

The first should be the 2nd nite at sea. Now the other one will probably and I say probably a sea day maybe the 2nd to the last nite. bdjam Posted September 27, 2008 #120 Share Posted September 27, 2008 Some of the comments were a bit "off" though . . . oh well. I noticed that too - but I think it's great that Princess and San Francisco have partnered this way. I didn't realize the dry dock was increased in size for these projects. 49er Posted September 28, 2008 #125 Share Posted September 28, 2008 Thanks Craig and Jack, Great pictures of the Star getting her "facelift". We will be on the Golden late next year and she will be in SF next April for the same treatment. These guys ought to have the process down pat by then. Looked like a beautiful day over there, still in the 90s up here in the foothills. Looking forward to rainy day:-) Thanks again. 49er
