Has anyone gone to the casino closest to the port in Halifax? Any winners? Is it something to see or just a locals low key casino?

As for pubs, I would go to the Lower Deck or The Olde Traingle. Two favorites with the locals.

I've been to that Casino a few times on trips to Halifax. I won a hundred bucks once. The only other one I've been too was the Hilton Casino in Gatineau, Quebec. The Halifax one was much more low key than the Hilton.

I've been to the Halifax casino a few times, only ever played the slots and Blackjack.

 

There are lots of slot machines but mostly they just take my money, my mom has done better at them then I. There are about 15 - 20 table games, not sure what all else there is other then BlackJack. I do about as well as I do on the ship casinos at the tables. There is only ever one $5 minimum table for blackjack (which always seems to be full), the rest are $10 and $15 minimum. They have a room of poker tables and they have a high rollers room, I haven't been in either of those.

 

There is a buffet restaurant which is mediocre, only ever ate there once. There is a cafe and a grill which I haven't tried.

 

If you are playing, you can get tea, coffee or soft drinks (soda, pop or whaterver you call it) for free.

Some of my favs (including Lower Deck / Olde Triangle - Try the Dublin Pastie at the OT!!) include The Split Crow, Maxwells Plum (over 60 draught beer selections on tap!), Economy Shoe Shop (great atmosphere), Fife and Drum, etc. etc.... There's almost to many to name!

 

As far as the casino goes... It's the only gambling establishment in the area so for us locals, it has to do - I might go once per year. You'll probably be disappointed as it's nothing compared to other casinos around the globe. If your bored however (and can walk after having the 60 beers from Maxwells) it's a great trip along the waterfront. Just don't have high expectations :)

For Halifax I used the google map distance measurement tool and came up with 1.69 miles. The casino is on the waterfront up the harbour from the cruiseport--toward the bridges on the other side of the Historic Properties. You can enter the hotel next to the Historic Properties, go up to the mezzanine level and walk through the pedway to the casino.

The Sydney Casino is about 3/4 mile from the cruise terminal.

 

Gatinieau is near Ottawa and to my knowledege there are no cruise ships near there.

Well I guess I have "won" in Halifax but I usually wind up losing my winnings as I don't consider the winnings real money and I use that money to play some more. However, since we only go there a few times a year I guess we can consider it an evening's entertainment.

I have won a few Royal Flushes on 25Cent Video Poker in both Halifax and Gatineau. The Gatineau casino is lovely but way too far away from any port. The location of the Halifax casino makes it easy to walk to along the waterfront. The bars and restaurants at the Halifax waterfront are terrific -- I love Murphy's and was there when the Round the World Clipper Sailboat Race stopped there in June this year. (pics in the link below).

A nice point about our Canadian casinos is no tax applied to jackpots!:D

Ships schedule is now at 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and I would think that's going to be Ships time not Atlantic.

 

Is it allowed to bring apples and carrots out to give the horses there too?

My own deposits in the casinos have not paid many dividends...;)

 

I have heard Bermuda is still in discussions allowing the Ships Casinos to be open in there three ports...

 

What a nice revenue source for them too.

As you come off the ship to the exterior,regardless of what pier your ship is berthed at, 20-21-22, which by the way 21 is a National Historic site, if you turn right after coming out of the building you will see a blue arch (Harbor Walk) a boardwalk which ends up at the Casino, app 1 1/2 miles, in between there is the Mar. Museum of the Atlantic, Historic Properties, shopping & Dining,and about 20-25 minute walk on level ground. Breathtaking views of the harbour as a multitude of great places to browse and shop. Pier 21 also has numerous merchants for shopping. Totally impossible to get lost, water on right going to Casino and on your left coming back to your ship. Casino like any other, luck of the draw for winnings, enjoy your stay in Halifax

I liked the halifax Casino however I liked the new Moncton Casino alot better.
