What happens if I book a round trip air knowing we will not use the return for the end of our transatlantic? U.K. to U.S.

 

It is a third of the price of cruise air or oneway

Officially, that violates the contract between you and the airline.

 

Unofficially, you are unlikely to have any problems. Just make sure the first leg on the ticket is the one you will take. If you miss the first leg, the entire itinerary is cancelled.

 

I would not make a habit of doing it with the same airline.

The airline police will come, snatch you up, stuff you into an aircraft, and throw you overboard when you reach 3,000 feet... :)

 

Actually, not much. You may have a difficult time if you try to book a flight on that airline in the next year or so...but otherwise, it'll go unclaimed. And when folks queue up to catch the flight, there'll be an extra seat for someone else..

Have you looked at AerLingus???? They sell TRUE one way tickets from Europe at VERY reasonable prices. Routing would be London to Dublin to Boston/JFK/Chicago. You MAY have to buy a one way ticket from one of the gateways (above) to your home airport. It is often prohibitively expensive to book a thru ticket on AerLingus all the way to your home airport. AerLingus CANNOT fly intra-USA flights. So they partner up with a US airline (most of the time either Jet Blue or AA).

 

The REALLY neat thing about flying through Dublin. You clear USA immigration BEFORE you board the plane in Dublin. No long lines in the USA. Bypass the immigration line in the USA, walk to baggage claim, walk your luggage through customs, then either leave the airport or connect to your next flight.
