Stopping in Reykjavik?

We happened to find the Visitor Centre for the new Icelandic Conference Hall and Concert Centre. We found it by accident because we thought it was the tourist info office!

It was a real find - free internet, espresso, chocolates, and hard candy. You can sit a a table and write your post cards or lounge in a bean bag chair and look at the view. There is also a balcony - great for taking pictures of the city. The displays about the new building were interesting and English speaking guides were happy to show us around. It was all very relaxed and comfortable and a great place to take a break.

From their web site:

The Visitor Centre is located on the top floor of Hafnarstraeti 20, on Laekjartorg square in Reykjavik city centre and is open to visitors 10am-5pm on weekdays and 1pm-5pm on weekends. Entrance is free.

The Exhibition

The new Visitor Centre provides excellent views over the building site and features an exhibition about the project and information about how the building work in the East Harbour area is progressing. The exhibition incorporates models of the buildings, the glass façade and the master plan. The show also features a “light wall” that projects a 24-hour recording of Icelandic summer light, compressed into an installation of one hour. The highlight of the exhibition is a 10 metre panorama window with a view north over the construction site. From this elevated platform, visitors can follow the construction process, relax and enjoy the magnificent view.

The new building should be spectacular. It's due to open Dec. 2009.

Cheers,

Dee
