Going to stay 2 days pre cruise anything to do or see??

Lots of stuff to do and see. The USS Alabama and USS Drum are there if you want to tour a Battleship and Sub. There are a couple of old forts that date back to the Civil War. Dauphin Island is worth a trip. There are several good places to eat. I'll have to go back thru my notes to find the names but I was really impressed by the food.:o Do a Google and you will find all kinds of stuff.

Thanks for the info...I have surfed the web and all towns and cities have things listed to see, but most of the time they aren't worth it. Wanted to hear from someone who has been there and enjoyed some of the sites!

If you have school age children with you, they might enjoy the Exploreum. It is downtown, within a block or two of the cruise terminal. They have alot of hands on exhibits and an Imax theater. Also, if you like seafood (I don't) you might like Felix's Fish Camp, Ed's Seafood Shed and the Original Oyster House. They are all located on the causeway near the battleship. Bellingrath Gardens is always popular as well. There is also a Mardi Gras museum located downtown and if you are into history and the civil war there is a full scale replica of the Confederate submarine Hunley at the city of Mobile museum also located downtown. The Hunley was built in Mobile and was recently recovered from the waters off of Charleston SC.

I think the civil war stuff will be very interesting and did not know about that submarine...I think that will be a must do for me! Not a big sea food liker, but my friend may like it and want to go! Thanks for the info... Any idea if the warship and the sub can be seen in a day? Do you know if they are open to visitors on Sundays??

Heres the link to the battleship. I'm not sure if it is open on Sundays, but yes, you can do it all in a day. There is also an aircraft pavillion there with a large assortment of warplanes and such. JFYI, the battleship was used in the filming of Under Seige with Steven Segall. All of the onboard footage was shot on the USS Alabama.

This is where the Hunley replica is located. It is downtown just a couple blocks from the cruise terminal. It is actually within sight of the terminal.

There is alot of interesting and historical exhibits here including costumes and kings and queens robes and crowns. I think they may actually have some floats here too. Not sure about that as the museum has relocated and expanded since I was there last about 12 years ago. Did you know that Mardi Gras originated in Mobile years before NOLA picked up the tradition?

The USS Alabama was open on Sunday last year. We stayed at the Battleship Inn next to the ship. Nice place but a little pricey for me. I'm tight.:D :D

The man that owns the Battleship Inn only has one arm and the last time I saw him, years ago, he had a three legged German Shepherd with him. He could count a stack of bills faster with one arm than I've ever seen ANYONE count money!! No wonder it's pricey there. :)

Just out of curiosity...what does "pricey" mean...how much were the rooms if you remember?? Was it a nice place??

I've never stayed there, but I looked it up and they are $119 a night double. Actually not out of line. It is supposed to be a very nice hotel and located right at the battleship park on the causeway. And they have a cruise package with parking and shuttle for $154 with a queen double room.

I think that we paid around $130 with taxes. It is a nice place and the resturant was very good. The shrimp was perfect, but pricey.

To be honest, I didn't have a bad meal in Mobile and we stayed there 2 days.

No one has mentioned it yet, but I highly recommend an airboat ride on the delta. We have the second largest river delta in the United States. This is a great time of year for airboat rides because the temperature is starting to cool off and the gators are active again. There are several vendors that do this but I've had very good experiences with Delta Airboat Express. I've done this airboat tour many times and have always been amazed and surprised by something new. It's really spectacular at sunset. Here's their website:

I believe that 5 Rivers also does airboat tours...here's their website:

All of these places are located on the Causeway between Mobile and Spanish Fort on the Eastern Shore...only a few miles from dowtown Mobile. Even if you don't do an airboat ride, go out on the causeway and explore one of the largest delta ecosystems in the country.

If memory serves me right, Its called the Captains Table. I have eaten there 3-4 times and it was good each time.

Hey sis, the USS Ala is a neat deal. Spent the night on board a time or two with a Boy Scout group. I learned the most when we took a tour via a sheet of paper. I dont know if its available to other than groups but imagine it is. The paper would guide you through the ship and give you questions to answer. Made for a very entertaining evening.

As for the restaurant 2 of the times I ate there was on those trips. We ordered Pizza and cokes for the boys and the adults split in two shifts and headed over to the restaurant for a well deserved break and a nice meal.;)

Have a good weekend!

The Captain's Table is no more. It is now called John Word's something-something and Jazz Cafe. I haven't been there so I can't comment on the food. The Captain's Table was, in my opinion, just okay. The seafood at Felix's Fish Camp or Ed's Seafood Shed or the Original Oyster House is way better.

I would also suggest Wintzell's Oyster House on Dauphin Street... it's about 10-12 blocks from Water Street (where the terminal is located). Not too far from the Cathedral that was previously mentioned.

Of course, if you don't want seafood there are plenty of places around the downtown area that would suit you.
