Making Rum Cake Purchases and Rum Question

I have been reading throughout the board and I wanted to know....when you all purchase Rum Cake, can you take it with you rather than having it delivered to the ship like you do Rum, or do you have to have it delivered to the ship?

Also, I have read and from my understanding, I may want to look at purchasing Blackbeard's brand of Rum Cakes and for the Rum, go to the Tortuga Rum Cake Factory and buy their Rum. Is this correct? I see alot of folks saying the Tortuga Rum is the best, which I am assuming is the Tortuga Rum Cake Factory's Rum. Is this the correct location to purchase the Rum or can I find it elsewhere on the island at a better rate? If I am wrong, please let me know.

I have started making a detailed listing of what I want to do in ports and so far, the only thing I have down besides Royal Palms is to check out the Big Black Dick Rum.

Thanks for any advice and clarification!

I love Blackbeard's rum cake, I've alway brought them on-board myself, and never had them delivered. When you buy a 6 pack of the Rum Cakes, you get a Large one free. The chocolate when is to die for ...

I just returned from a cruise. We were in Grand Caymen on Monday. I purchased Rum Cakes at the Tortuga Rum Cake factory and kept it with me. The Cruise ship did not confiscate when I returned.

Can't comment on the Rum, sorry but I had first hand experiance with Tequila in Cozumel :)

I don't remember the cost, but they keep well. If un-opened they will easily make it home. Also once I get home, I keep them wrapped in the fridge and they stay fresh for a while. Warning though, too much can definitely have an affect.... so eat responsibly!! :D

I purchased a pack of 4 assorted cakes. Each cake is about the size of a side plate. The cost was US$28. I carried them home in my hand luggage and they were fine and delicious. I don't recommend putting them in your checked luggage.

At the Cake Factory they encourage you to sample the cake AND the Rum, you can leave there feeling quite happy

how far is the Tortuga Rum Cake factory from the Reel grill/ royal palm beach area. Is it on the way back to the ship or further out? we plan on going to the beach first and then go pick up some cakes. I dont want to get them first and have them sit in the sun all day.

How much to the rum cakes cost? Would they last a week until I get back to the states or need to be eaten sooner?

I'm not sure how the ones in the store are packaged, but if they're the same as the ones on the ship, they keep for quite awhile.

I'm embarassed to admit this, but we had one we'd forgotten about for 6 months! I made DH have the first slice, but if anything, he said they tasted better then ever!

The cake did not survive long after that.

Easy Sailing... To answer your Tortuga Rum question, they box up your rum, put your room number on it and deliver it to the ship. You don't get it until your last night on the ship. I've seen it at a little liquor store to the left of the tender pier, but I don't remember if it was more or less expensive there than at the factory.

And, I second the tasting of the rum cakes and rum at the factory. Tortuga rum has a taste that is very unique. We're going to get a few more bottles when we're there in January!!

Hmm... that's a good question. As I recall, when we got back on the ship and went through security there were piles of boxes of liquor near the security station. I'm not sure if those boxes were confiscated as passengers tried to carry them on or if they were the boxes that were delivered from the stores. I suppose if there weren't too many boxes you could have someone check the pile for you. I know ours showed up at the room. I think that Carnival had the Tortuga Rum in the Duty Free shop on the ship. They were also price matching any prices from the islands, so you'd be sure to get a good deal. Buying it from the ship might make you feel a bit more secure. I'd do it the first night so that they don't sell out before you get some. If you find a cheaper deal on the island afterward, you can bring some sort of proof of a price and they should adjust (At last that's how it was a few years ago.. we never found a better price on the other stuff we bought. Plus, at the liquor tasting the first night they offer even more deals (such as a free bottle if you buy so many). Make sure you do the liquor tasting.. if you keep going back for more samples all those little shot glasses add up!!!

Hope this helps,

Paul

Blackbeard rum cakes are delish, and less expensive than the Tortugas. If my memory serves me correctly, because I have purchased both, that the cake quality seemed richer and better with Blackbeard, where the Tortugas are spongier and not as tasty, but seem to have a little more rum. The chocolate Blackbeard cake blows Tortuga's chocolate out of the water! If you are going for cake quality or price, stick with Blackbeard. If it's just the rum you are after or the brand name, go for the Tortuga! I was left wishing I had purchased more Blackbeard and less Tortuga's!

I have heard rum cakes can last a long time especially if frozen. Each little cake (small ones) are vacuum sealed. Honestly I was surprised upon opening box to see what I felt was a small cake. It is like a baby jello mold, that can be held in open palm of hand. Although like someone said- a little too much cake and you can feel it. I am a chocolate lover, and do like it, but surprisingly like the original flavor. I'd call it classic and stick to that if confused for gifts.

Some of the specialist during holidays deliver them to our dental office as gifts. I always woohoo when I see it arrive. I also prefer my cake cold.

We cruised last November and bought a number of rum cakes, which we very carefully toted back home. At Christmas I realized that our local Lowe's Foods sells the exact same rum cakes -- CHEAPER!

Wonder what otehr food stres or specialty sell the Rum Cakes, I could use a tasty cruise reminder.

Oh my, kinda like wondering of that liquor people buy and save just a few bucks is really worth it.

If you just have to have that Cayman Rum Cake fix, they are always available by mail order, but the price with shipping is higher than you might find it if you are lucky enough to live near a store that stocks them. (Like, perhaps, if you live in Cayman ;) )

I looked for a website for Blackbeard's but didn't find one of their own. Some speciality vendors do sell theirs online.

Big Black Dick Rum.

You've made a good choice there - we got 2 bottles when we were there last time. There are 2 stores right near the tender pier. Go there FIRST and buy your rum - they'll deliver it to the ship, we had NO problem with that store! This is some REALLY good rum that can only be purchased in Grand Cayman - read the back of the bottle for the whole story about Dick. Oh, and don't forget to have your picture taken with him!! They have a statue of him at the door to both stores and it's a perfect photo op! Just be warned, we had a rum party on the saturday after we returned - one of our friends ended up having his gall bladder removed the following monday!!! And I REFUSE to blame it on the rum!

We bought two six-packs of the tortuga rum cakes and brought them back to give as Christmas presents. I'm embarrassed to say that my husband and I ate four of them so I had to hide the rest!

We ended up buying rum on the ship becuase we saw that the cruise line was matching prices with the island - for us it just seemed more convenient.

I was in Grand Cayman a couple of years ago on RC out of Cape Canaveral. I had may cakes and rum delivered to the ship w/o problem. All were returned in good condition on the last night.

Same with Tequila in Cozumel on Carnival Imagination.

Have it delivered. Leaves more room for the rest of your shopping booty.

:)
