The majority of the taxis are small cars. But there are also large taxi vans that hold up to 8 people. They are everywhere but if you find a taxi you like, you can have any driver radio that taxi number and they will come get you.

What do you mean they will come get me? We have small kids and are leary of taking them in the small cars, but a bigger taxi van would be fine. If we get off the ship and find one to take us to where we want to go, how do we get them to bring us back to the ship again. I wouldn't want to be stuck at the beach and have to take them in the smaller cars back. Thanks for your help!

There are taxi stands right out of your pier by the street, regardless of which pier (at Puerta Maya you go out to the parking lot, at TMM you go through the shopping area, and at Punta Langosta you have to go up the escalator and across the street to the horseshoe area in front of Carlos & Charlies to get a taxi). There are small car taxis, station wagon taxis and taxi vans at all of them. They are lined up in order...who gets next fare, so there might be some questions to why you want a van if it is not next in line but not a problem. No matter where you get dropped off on the island, there will always be a taxi to pick you up and take you somewhere else. You don't have to have the same taxi pick you up as dropped you off. BUT, if you happen to find a driver that you really like, you can ask any other driver to radio for them to come and get you. Just rememeber the number of the taxi you liked.
