princesslondon Posted October 12, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 12, 2008 Is there putt-putt? Ben and Jerrys? The only cruise we have to compare is Disney and I don't think the 2 are really comparable, but we really wanted a casino and something different. Any other info? Laid-back Posted October 12, 2008 #2 Share Posted October 12, 2008 Is there putt-putt?Ben and Jerrys? The only cruise we have to compare is Disney and I don't think the 2 are really comparable, but we really wanted a casino and something different. Any other info? No golf, no Ben & Jerry's, no specialty restuarant. There is a casino. I really think that the Vison class ships cater more to the older crowd than to families with young kids. Just my opinion. But GOS is a nice ship and provides with an enjoyable cruise.

Morecruisesplz Posted October 12, 2008 #4 Share Posted October 12, 2008 Is there putt-putt?Ben and Jerrys? The only cruise we have to compare is Disney and I don't think the 2 are really comparable, but we really wanted a casino and something different. Any other info? We love the Grandeur. There is a Ben & Jerry's - it is located with the coffee bar that was remodeled during the dry dock. There is no putt-putt though. It is a beautiful ship and there is much to be said for the smaller, more intimate cruise experience. Seems much easier to us to find pool chairs and we could even use the Solarium. (Never did find a seat there once during our recent 7 day Liberty cruise.) Staff seems more friendly to us and they seem to recognize you by name by the 2nd day of the cruise. We've taken our grandchildren on the Grandeur and they had plenty of company. Maybe some sailing tend towards an older crowd (repos and longer cruises) but certainly not all of them. The centrum is a great place to sit and read a book or just people watch if you like or if you have had enough sun. There is also a nice game room and a library if you prefer a place more quiet. Hope this helps. I'm sure you will have a great cruise.

Tanker4 Posted October 15, 2008 #6 Share Posted October 15, 2008 Has anyone had the room open in the solarium? Not on the last two we've been on but we're booked on a 10 day on her in Dec with 4 at sea days so maybe they'll do it then.

Tanker4 Posted October 15, 2008 #8 Share Posted October 15, 2008 I heard they turn the card room into a concierge lounge this fall. ;) Rumor is that they might do it sometime in Nov. Hope so as we're cruising on her in Dec.........

PSCruiser Posted October 15, 2008 #11 Share Posted October 15, 2008 Has anyone had the room open in the solarium? Yes, I've seen the roof open several times on various cruises. A related issue - the solarium pool has a strong bubble generator on the bottom, can be kinda fun to swim through. However, they seldom put it on unless you find a staff member and request. Same with the roof - if you want to have it open, watch for an officer passing through. Don't be concerned by what the Grandeur doesn't have - she is a beautiful ship, has great layouts in areas like the dining room, windjammer, theater, lounge. You will discover many little details, like the bubble generator, loveseats in the theater, that are unique. Also, great crew.
biomedbob Posted October 15, 2008 #12 Share Posted October 15, 2008 The question about the solarium top not being open is interesting. The staff on the Grandeur have a standard list of reasons why it isn’t open. It’s too cold, too hot, too windy, not windy enough, ship is cruising against the wind/current, air conditioning would be taxed, it’s not working, or older cruisers want it shut. All of these reasons are BS. We are a part of a loose-knit group (not militant) who often sail on the Grandeur. We are armed with an aenometer, barometers, thermometers, GPS, weather maps, etc. Whatever their argument is, we can counter it. The truth is, someone is too lazy to make the call to whoever can push the button to make the magic happen. There is a telephone on the wall on the Men’s bathroom side just outside the solarium where you can just start dialing everyone and bitch about the top not being open. It takes about 10 minutes before the top starts to move! Just remember, the Grandeur is the worst ship in the fleet! Happy Sailing!

Since November is almost here we shall see what happens. I certainly hope CL's are added to all Royal's ships.

The lounge was supposed to be added to the remaining Vision Class ships in the fall. As of now, nothing. :)

I'm going to do my best to put up a fuss so they open it if it's decent out. Who wants to be in a stuffy closed in environment is they can have the fresh ocean air? wraithe Posted October 16, 2008 #24 Share Posted October 16, 2008 I obviously love Grandeur. Sailing on her for the fourth time two weeks from now!!!! Captain Rob is the best. The Oct 30 repo will be my 5th cruise on Grandeur, 2nd this year, and like biomedbob said, she is the worst ship out there. If you don't believe me, take a look at my reviews. I did learn something from this thread, though, about the bubbler in the solarium pool, have to give that a try. The solarium top usually just takes a phone call, but beware, once the top comes off, the deck gets hot-hot-hot. Be sure you have pool shoes. Love to know since we may sail with her in June Pictures would be great too! Last refurb in April 2007, if I remember correctly. Ben & Jerry's and Lattetudes is on deck 6, forward, starboard side of the Centrum. If you ask, they will give you free pastries, normally they'll only offer if you buy coffee or ice cream.
