Malta on a Sunday and Cathedral visit

Will be going to Malta on a Sunday and I read somewhere "everything" in Valetta is closed that day. Really wanted to see the Cathedral. Is this possible at all? Also wanted to go to Mdina. Will have our boys along - 12, 8, so anything to do with knights would be of interest to them. Any suggestions? Thanks all. Debbi

Hi Debbi. We were in Malta for a few weeks a few years ago and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. We only spent one day in Valetta but it was action packed. We were there during the week so I can't speak to what will be open and what will be closed, however, I believe that the cathedral, especially on Sunday, will be open. One of the things that we did was view a short movie on the history of Malta. It was extremely well done and they packed 6000 years very well into about 1.5 hours. My kids, at that time were a bit older than yours (18, 20 & 30) but we all really loved the experience. We are of Maltese decent so that might have something to do with it, but I think that anyone would at least enjoy the movie. If I recall correctly, it was called "The Malta Experience" or something of that nature. Enjoy your cruise!

Cathedral will be open on Sunday but just bear in mind that there might be masses going on so you will have to pick your time to visit carefully. Shops will be closed but cafes should still be open. Visit the Upper Baracca gardens, lovely views over the Grand Harbour. Malta Experience is worth doing, it's down at the bottom of Valletta near the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

 

Mdina is lovely and I believe there is some sort of show about the knights there too (took my boys a while ago). You could get a bus to Mdina from Valletta, just bear time in mind as you don't want to miss your ship

We were in Malta on a Sunday and were able to quietly walk into the back of the Cathedral and view it from there only--it is a beautiful building and worth seeing.
