Nymue Posted October 24, 2008 #1 Share Posted October 24, 2008 Can anyone recommend a private Tour Company for a day tour to Newgrange for about 8 people while in port? Anne
Alsacienne Posted October 25, 2008 #2 Share Posted October 25, 2008 Sorry to sound ignorant, but where is Newgrange, and which port will you be in?
Rare chrismch Posted November 3, 2008 #3 Share Posted November 3, 2008 Newgrange is about 1 hr north of Dublin. It is "a type of monument known to archaeologists as a passage-grave or passage-tomb. It was constructed around 3200BC, according to the most reliable Carbon 14 dates available from archaeology. This makes it more than 600 years older than the Giza Pyramids in Egypt, and 1,000 years more ancient than Stonehenge." We just came back from Ireland last week and did this tour. All the tours pick up from the tourist info center on Suffolk St in the city center around 10 am. You can just take a bus there and hope you can get a tour once you are at the site or book a pre-arranged tour. We took the Mary Gibbons tour which picked up at 10:15 and returned around 4:30. The price was 35 euros pp. It also did a stop in Tara - the ancient seat of the high kings of Ireland. She gave a running commentary on the Boyne Valley where these are located through much of the trip which was very interesting. Once you get to the Newgrange visitors center you are assigned a tour time as they only allow a limited amount of people through at a time. The actual tour to the site only lasts about 15 minutes but if you are a history buff it is well worth it. The visitors center also offers a lot to see and read in their museum which is also part of the price.
