Live from the Fantasy

Hi all…

DW and I are on board the Fantasy sailing for five days from New Orleans to Progresso and Cozumel.

This is our eight Carnival Cruise and our second on board the Fantasy.

The ship looks absolutely marvelous and the EOF upgrades are really sharp. All the new carpet really has spruced up the ship and the new areas are real nice. The Lido deck especially looks great with the Trees and additional changes. It has been almost a month since the EOF was completed so now there are no more finishing touches being done and all is normal.

We left home on Sunday and spent the night in Hattiesburg. This meant a nice casual three hour drive to the ship on Monday.

We got up and had enjoyed the breakfast bar at Shoneys and headed south on I-59. We noticed it was pretty cold, so we stopped in Picayune and found a Wal-Mart to buy some drinks. We also found some nice jackets for $10 each and since the temps were in the 40’s we felt like we might need something to wear on deck.

We arrived at the Port at Noon on Monday and there were plenty of Porters and as usual parking was a breeze. We did find the line was pretty long and all the ropes were up and it extended into the hallway past the elevators. We stood in line for about an hour before we got to security.

DW has been using a fold up cooler on wheels to transport a lot of our things in the past. We had heard about the new 12 x 12 rule on coolers, but hoped since we were not using it as a cooler we could go on, but sure enough, security stopped us and told us we could not transport that cooler onto the ship. We had to empty it and try to get everything into our other bags. To assist us, they also provided us with some garbage bags. (They also stopped another guy for the same reason.) We had to put our name and a ticket on our cooler so we could pick it up when we leave on Saturday.

Strangely enough, once we got pas security, we walked right up to the embarkation desk, got our cards, and boarded the ship immediately. They only thing left was to dodge the photographers and walk up the walkway.

It was 1:30 when we boarded the ship, so we walked right to our cabin and dropped off our luggage. They had just opened the doors so it was fortuitous timing. We try to get our rooms on the Empress deck because embarkation and debarkation is so easy when you are on the deck you enter on. We are in E-49 so we are very near the elevators also.

We went up to the Putt Putt at 2:00 where there was supposed to be a meet and greet, but only one other person was there so that M & G was very disappointing. We had a pretty good roll call group, but most had met in NOLA on Sunday night.

On to the Buffett…DW hit the Chinese Stir Fry which she really enjoyed. For me, it was time for a Carnival Burger, Hot Dog, and Fries. We went to tour the new parts of the ship. The Lido Buffett looks like an entirely new place. Seating has been rearranged and many other things changed up. Pizza and the Deli are in a permanent spot at the rear of the ship. A Huge salad bar and dessert bar are also there.

We went out back and viewed the Serenity deck. It looks great and they are serious about making it for adults only. It is certainly not private like the old “Funnell Deck” adults areas were so I don’t expect there to be topless bathing, but the two hot tubs looked very inviting, except for the fact it was 45 degrees and 25 mph wind blowing.

We went up to see the Water Works, and while I will probably never go down a slide they looked great and it will be fun to watch others do so. It looks like a great place for kids and familys to play together.

The Lido deck pool area is incredible. You would not believe it is the same ship. The trees and the decking make it look so inviting and give it such a nice tropical feel. There are an unbelievable number of chairs to sit out in on Lido and the other decks that surely chair hogging should not be a problem (but I am sure it will be.)

It was approaching time for Life Boat drills so we returned to our cabin and got ready. We went up to the Universal Lounge and waited. It took a while and they did make us walk up to the actually life boat locations so it took a while longer. We ended the drill at 4:15 and returned to our cabin to lose the vests. I went up to watch sail away. We did not leave until 5:00 but it made it great to really see us bump away from the dock and make the turn in the river.

We enjoy early dining, so we made it to the Celebrating Dining Room for 6:00 and found we are at a table for six. We love to meet new people so this is part of the fun. Our table mates are from New Orleans and on their first Fantasy cruise, but they have cruised several times before. The other two never showed up. Dinner was fantastic as always and then it was time to check out the casino.

It was here we heard a really scary announcement. The Fantasy was having engine problems and would have to stop for a while for repairs. At 8:30 we felt the ship stop and drop anchor. Big Tex came on and said, it was like having a flat tire and all was safe.

I went on to karaoke and enjoyed meeting Rozwin and had a blast. It was a busy night and a lot of people came and went with some good singers and some…well..how shall I say…not so good.

I had sent in a letter to the Casino club and got a letter with a comp drink and 500 points, so we went by the Casino for a free Pina Coloda and the points, and then went to the welcome aboard show. Big Tex gave the typical old joks and then we had John Wesley Austin who is also a comedian. He was pretty funny and a pretty good show.

After dinner it was time for bed, but I always spend a little time in the Piano Bar. They Piano bar player was pretty good and has a nice long list of songs he does, but will do others also. I started to sing with him, and he invited me to join on in. We had a blast as I added some harmony to his singing, and as happens every cruise, people thought I was part of the act.

I then went to bed, but woke up at 5:00am, and wondered if we had finally started moving. I turned the TV onto the channel with the GPS, and learned we had only started moving, so we were now almost 8 hours behind…and I was wondering if we were going to lose a port….

But I was too tired to worry about it, so back to sleep in my nice Carnival Comfort bed…and see what the new day would have in store.

Hey Jabee.....glad to hear that Rozwin (karaoke host) is doing a good job.

Rob C. is so much fun in the piano bar. Doesn't he remind you of Joe Pesci?

Glad everything else worked out...we had heard rumors...thanks for confirming.

I should have known you "broke the ship"...we will be sending you a bill!! :D

Tell Rozwin that "Cher" will see him January 1st for a B2B!! woo hoo

Hope the rest of the cruise is WONDERFUL!!

Btw, John Heald did not get to make it because of scheduling conflicts with the Philly shoot and the World Series. He is sitting in Miami...taking Valium!

what do the points do?

You use your S&S card just like in a casino, your slot play is tracked. The 500 points goes onto your account. I believe when you hit 1000 points it is automatically converted to $10 in your player's bank. Your S&S card also acts as your player's bank so that you can go to a different machine by transferring your remaining balance on the machine to your card.

This way you dont have to cash out, carry the coins to the casino cage, have them counted, and then get paid (if you are lucky). You can take the card to the cage and cash it out or just keep the funds on the card for the next night.

It is now 4:15 in the afternoon and we are back underway.

They apparently did a good job repairing the propurlsion, because even though we were over eight hours behind, we are now pretty much back on schedule. We were scheduled to arrive in Progresso at 7am, but instead we will arrive 9. We were supposed to leave at 4, but will get to stay unil 5 now, so overall, we are going to lose one hour in Progresso.

Cozumel will be as scheduled with no change.

It has been pretty rough today as we are travelling pretty fast, and the ship is rolling a lot, but it has not been unbearable. The sun came out at noon, and a few hardy souls have even hit the pools and are sunbathing. It looks like things are going to be ok after all.

It has been a slow day so far for us. We got up and ate breakfast in the dining room. It sure is nice to have wonderful sit down service and not go through the buffet, which we normally do. And, a hot ham and cheese omlet and French toast was a wonderful way to start the day.

After breakfast we went to the Port talk and heard Big Tex talk about all the available tours. We are going to do the Merida tour and shopping trip in Progresso. In Cozumel we made arrangements with Tour Cozumel.net and will do the Isla Passion tour. Since it is not a Carnival tour, we learned that they are not allowed to meet us at the Puerta Maya (Carnival) pier. We will have to take a Taxi to Carlos and Charlies and meet them there> Since we have been to Cozumel several times, this is no big deal.

I went down to talk to “Big Tex” after the talk, and was pleased when he asked me if I was going to sing in the Talent show again. This is our third cruise with him, so it was special that he remembered me from a year ago. He laughed because he remembered I was singing and the ship war rocking real bad, and I actually slipped and fell to my knees, but did not miss a single note.

After the tour talk, I decided to get internet time, so I could send in this report. $ we24 for 60 minutes is still hard to swallow, but now I can check my e-mail also.

For lunch we decided to go to the Deli. I had the ham and cheese and dw had the Reuben. She said it was as good as always. I wanted French fries, so we got our sandwich and wen to the grill where I decided to grab a burger also…(so hard to pass up a Carnival burger.) DW got onion rings and we had to staple Ice cream for dessert!

After lunch we went to the art auction. I know some don’t like it, but we love to look over the art. We collect Schaffer and Myles and they had four pieces available for “take off” so we could not pass up bidding and winning them, so we will have some more art at home when we get there.

After the art auction, we decided to donate another $20 to the casino. The slots seemed a little tighter than last night.

Now we are about to get dressed for the Captains reception in an hoiur and then elegant dining tonight..

Hey folks, we are having a blast…

Sure wish you were all here…

Great review, keep it coming! First timer here and anxious to get a feel for what you're experiencing. I had heard some people complain of a sewer smell, are you smelling anything like that? Hopefully, this was just a problem out of drydock.

Thanks and I'll be waiting for your next post!

Glad things are back on track!!!

If you have your own laptop with you, you can type the "review" off line and then cut and paste to save yourself some time (and cash!!)

Have fun in Cozumel. And get someone to video (secretly) your Talent Show performance. We want to see it on YouTube!!!!

Greetings all…

Wow, it has been so busy I forgot to find time to blog…but I will try and catch up a bit on our trip.

First of all…rumors that we sunk and had to be towed back to New Orleans were a bit premature. We did have the problems that I described, but we were never in any danger and we simply sat on the side of the Mississippi River for eight hours. Also, for Jetskier and those coming next week, don’t worry. The old girl is showing she may be 18 years old, but she can still run with the best of them.

Even though we were nine hours behind when we left the mouth of the Mississippi River at 8am on Tuesday morning, Captain Allegretti put the girl in high great and we averaged OVER 19 knots going to Progresso. We were scheduled to originally arrive in Progresso at 7am, but instead we arrived at about 8:45, and were disembarking by 9:00. That was absolutely amazing. We got to stay in Progresso until 5:00, when the original schedule was to depart at 4:00, so the rest of the trip is now on schedule.

To pick up where I left off at 4:15 on Tuesday…We went to the Captains Welcome Aboard party at 5:00 and had the typical free drinks and hor’dourves. It is always a nice occasion. For some reason, only about six of the staff where there, so we did not see all the crew we normally have introductions for. Captain Allegretti was his normal self and he assured us we were going to get to Progresso well.

Next we went to dinner and it was nice. Everyone I saw was within the dress code for Elegant Night. Of course, getting to and from Dinner was a mess because all the pesky carnival Photogs were out shutting down the staircases, blocking walk ways, etc. (As you can tell, I am not a big fan of photogs and I delight in telling them no, I do not want my picture made. On this cruise, I have even returned the favor by asking them to pose for me. I promise, I am not being a jerk about it, but just want people to understand that when I say no, than please do not continue to beg me.)

After dinner, I went to my normal karaoke. It was pretty strange as no one wanted to sing, so Rozwin kept having me get up over and over again. I did about ten songs and I started to joke that Carnival needed to pay for my cruise. People even were giving me requests. The entertainer in me was having a blast, but we finally got some others to start singing.

That night I went to the Show in the lounge. The cast did a Night Club Revue, and it was pretty much the same show they did last year. They did add a couple of new songs, but I was disappointed to find they have not changed much. The male singers are very good, and the female is good to, but not as good as he is. The dancers are always a fun show to see and the talking couch was the hit of the show.

Late night included another visit to the Piano Bar with Rob. The crowds have been very dismal late at night, but he is a lot of fun, and will do just about any request. The piano bar is in a bad location next to the Celebration Dining Room, and nothing else is near late night, so that might be part of the problem.

I woke up at 7:00am on Wednsday, and wondered if we would really reach Progresson on time. I turned on the TV to see, yep, we were very close. We went to the Lido and got breakfast and saw we were pulling into the Harbor at Progresso, and waiting on us was the Ecstacy already at dock. We pulled in next to Fantay;s younger sister and watched smoothly we docked.

We have been to Progresso before, but all we did was walk around the flea market. We did a Carnival shore excursion where we went on a bus to Merida City and got a tour. It was a nice way to get introduced to Merida City. I have an injured foot so I did not want to do a lot of walking, so it was a nice way to see things.

We returned from our tour at 3:30, and boarded the ship quickly. I went to the Universal Lounge because it was sign up time for the Guest Talent Show. They only will take six guests, but only five of us showed. One was a guy known as “Old Man Wiggles” who is 97 years young, and cruises at least once a month. He was a blast. We practiced with he band and were told to come back at 10 that night for the show.

I Went and changed clothes and we went to dinner again. We enjoy early dining, because we normally eat at 5:30 at home. It means we can eat, and then have the remainder of the evening free.

After Dinner I went back to karaoke and there was a guy named Scott, who has a great country voice. He and I put on a show again doing requests from the crowd. At 10 we went back to the lounge and I sang “My Way.” I love Frank Sinatra music and always enjoy singing this with an orchestra. It is also so much fun to have all the crowd tell you how good it sounded, and a few even asked me if I had recorded a CD. The real key for Carnival is that they get a free show that they do not have to pay for, and we guests get to have fun singing with a live band.

Well, that gets us through Wednesday….Thursday is Cozumel day and I will write more on it later.

Wish you were here…

Jimmy

OK…a few special notes…..

Special. to LHP…Linda, Rozwin says hello, and he even knows you will be on the Bloggers cruise. He says you and I need to cruise together some time also. We have got to work on that Karaoke Cruise idea.

Special to Jetskier…Dave…I have bad news for you. The Fantasy still does not have fruit juice on board. No one knows when it will be back.

Also…John Heald was supposed to be on board this week, but it seems he got held up going from Dallas to Philadelphia. Something about a baseball game being played there. Gee..life at sea, I still don’t know who won the World Series.

Special to Cruise Critic Host….Mach…We made it to Passion Island and I will do a separate review when I get home, but I will say, it was fantastic and one of the best days in Port I ever spent.

Also…special TV notes:

Channell 15 has the GPS showing the ships position, speed, and time.

Channell 17 will show ship events like the contests, shop and port talks, talent show, etc.

Channell 40 has the ship cam which shows the lido deck 24 hours a day.

Fantsay-Cozumel Day

Hello everybody…

Cozumel day is a very busy day on the Fantasy.

We woke up at 7 and got breakfast, and while watching saw that we were pulling into port. Again, we parked at Punta Maya pier, which is the new pier. The interesting things is that the Fantasy and the Ecstasy were the only ships in port today, so the town was not very busy, and it made any trips pretty easy. It also seemed that the vendors were more willing to bargain since there were not many customers.

Let me back up and tell you about one interesting thing from Progresso. It seems that we picked up four additional passengers. There were four ladies who were booked on the Ecstacy, and they got very busy shopping with Fantasy shoppers, and did not keep track of the time. When they arrived at the pier at 4:00, the Ecstacy was sailing off having left at 3:30.

Another thing that helped with this miscue, is that for the last two weeks, ships time is still on Central Daylight time, while Mexico went ahead and shifted back to Central standard time two weeks ago. Since, the US makes the change this weekend, it should not affect any future cruises until next spring.

So, the ladies showed up at the pier and started asking what to d. Someone suggested since the Fantasy was going to Cozumel also, maybe they could get a lift, so they were given passage on the Fantasy for the overnight trip. As a bonus, they got to enjoy Dinner with “Old Man Wiggles,” which thrilled him. At the talent show he said he could not believe it when they brought these four “beautiful” women to his table to eat.

DW and I had booked a trip to Passion Island, and many will recall the rumors on the board a couple of weeks back about *****. Well, after we disembarked we got a taxi to town and arrived in town at Carlos and Charlies by 9:20. We got real worried when no one was there. We found a local tourist information person and asked them if they knew anything. He got our letter and read it and reminded us we were on ship time, and Cozmel was not. So, it was only 8:20 when we arrived, so we got to wait around until 9:00 when a representative from Passion Island arrived. He arrived and got us a taxi to take us out. The trip was rough. They have had some bad storms over the past week and the dirt road was a mess. It took 20 minutes to go what should have been a 10 minute drive. When we arrived, we transferred to a boat that took us to the island .

The island was a paradise we hoped for. We got a little indoctrination to the island, where to go for the open bar, the buffet, and other amenities. We found a nice spot under a tree (I did not want a lot of sun) and laid down, and did not want to move the rest of the day. The beach was a bit dirty because of the storms, but they had men out shoveling sea weed that had been blown up and they were busy cleaning up the beach. I also learned that they had not been open for three days because of the storms, and we were the first time they had been open all week. So I can look past some of the negatives and recognize how hard they were working the get the place in to notch shape.

We enjoyed laying our, and then taking a walk down the beach. We also got to try riding a Segway, and that was quite an experience. It was still very windy and the water was pretty cold, so not one was out swimming. There were probably only about a 150 people out today, and most were sunbathing and playing on the beach. After our walk and finding some shells, we checked out the local vendors who have a little flea market. We ate and enjoyed all they had. The bar was flowing freely with beer, rum drinks, tequila, etc. They also had a cash bar if you wanted other drinks (like pina coloda and margaritas.)

As the day grew on, I decided to get a massage. It was $30 for 30 minutes and worth every penny. We had agreed to leave at 3:00, and the water taxi took us back to the mainland, and our taxi driver was waiting for us and returned us to the ship.

If you want a nice quiet and secluded spot this island is it. If you want a lot of water toys and kids play things it is not.

We returned to the ship and got in line to board about 4:00. The line was huge and long and it took us about 30 minutes to board. Part of the problem was the Ecstacy left just before us, and they had to half loading until it left and everyone seemed to arrive at the same time.

We boarded and changed clothest quickly because the past gurest party was at 5:00 It was the typical party and always interesting to hear. I was glad to see they finally have changed the movie.

After that it was off to dinner and then I came back to write my last posting. I then went to the Casino and decided to play Blackjack. I always have a rule that when I double my stakes, I need to quit, so I went in with $30 and left with $80. I will not waste my time on slots any more this trip.

Tonight is the Deck party and we watched some of the events, and then I got caught up in the Karaoke part. They needed a man to sing against a woman, and I was gullable enough to volunteer. So, I got to sing…”Man, I Feel like a Woman…” And then, five of us got to lead everyone in “YMCA,”

DW and I then went up because she loves the Mexican buffet, and now we are off to bed, and plan to sleep very late in the morning.

Sigh…tomorrow is our last day and the cruise will be over….it has been tooooo short. How about I just stay with you next week Jetskier?

Oh, and yes I am using my own laptop, but this service is soooo slow.Sheesh, it takes five minutes to log onto Cruise Critic.

The cabin might be a little crowded if you stayed another week. Glad to hear you are having a great trip. Tell Larry in the casino bar, "his brother from another mother" will see him soon.

Fixing to take the dog to the kennel and head to NOLA this afternoon. I was picking about bringing some baling wire and duct tape for Big Tex just in case.

Hi all…

(I wrote this on Saturday night, but they already had shut down the Internet, so I had to wait until to day to post…I will finalize this later.)

This is the saddest blog I have made….it is the last night of the cruise.

We will not be home until Sunday, but I will add to this with info on debarkation. I will tell you that it is now 11:00 at night, and we have already been in the Mississippi River for almost two hours. We will easily reach New Orleans early and debark on time. I was told that on the last cruise the last guest was off the ship by 10:30, so we should be just as good.

This of course was a sea day, so DW and I decided it was a nice morning to sleep in, so we did not get up until about 9am. We went up to the Buffet for breakfast and then just kicked around the ship. I went up to play Blackjack and did well for a while, and then they changed the dealer, and it was downhill from there.

The Casino is pretty nice and they have rearranged it somewhat. There are several progressive slots including one where you can win a car (and someone did that two cruises back.)

After spending time there we went back to the buffet and had lunch (good old Double Carnival Burger.) From there it was off to the Art Auction. I was a bit disappointed because they did not have a long viewing time, and not much interest. It is always frustrating when the try to sell the $15,000 pieces of art and try to tell you how collectable they are. Yeah, right…this is a cruise that most people paid $300-500 to take and they are just going to come out and buy something like that.

After the auction we wandered around the ship some more, and the returned to the room to start packing. We watched the debark talk by Big Tex and saw that very little has changed. We also watched the “Love and Marriage” game which is a take off on the Newlywed game. It was pretty hilarious but some of the husbands may have a rough time tonight!

Later we met the Art Auctioneer to make arrangements for our purchases. We bought four pieces that were “take offs” so we will carry them off the ship tomorrow. The big thing is that we do not have to pay shipping. We saved a lot by doing this, and were fortunate to find these Schaeffer/Myles. Oh, and for the dubious, I have seen that you normally pay $200-300 for these, and we got them hand signed for $75-85.

Next we were off to dinner for our “last supper,” I always give a little tip for my waiters and this trip wanted to give something to our Maître d’ who is Stan the Man from Mississippi. Of course he is not originally from Mississippi, but he is married to a woman from Biloxi, so he now claims that as home. A lot of people are critical of the Maître d’, but I am very high on Stan. He was all over the dining room and made sure his workers did well.

After dinner it was Karaoke time, and it was interesting because everybody was starting to get into Halloween outfits. But 9:00 the hallway was filled with all types of costumes. Some were strange, some downright gross, some ridiculous. It made quite the scene, and I will try and post some pictures.

I noticed out that we were starting to list back and forth, and realized we were in the River. I checked a TV and found the GPS channel, and sure enough we were already headed up river.

Later we went up to the Lido to see what we could see, and saw lights on both sides of us indicating we were definitely in the river. We also started seeing other ships in the channel. I wondered back to the ice cream machine, and had to wait on someone ahead of me in line. I had to laugh when I realized it was Chef Jorge, the chief chef of the ship. It seemed funny to see the chief chef with an ice cream cone, but I really enjoyed talking to him. As we talked, I realized this was at least our fourth cruise with him. We had him twice on the Celebration, and now twice on the Fantasy. I asked him about a rumor I had heard that he had been a chef to a President. He said he used to work for Hilton, and as their chef he often had to cook for special Presidential affairs. He was chief Chef for President Reagan and George Bush at their inauguration dinners, and had cooked often for them. I thought it was pretty impressive to know that Carnival has a man with these types of credentials.

Now, it is time to go to bed. We are getting up around 6 in the morning to finish packing and be ready to leave when we are called. We have too much luggage for self assist, but being on the Empress deck, we should get off pretty early.

It has been a great cruise, and I can not wait for the next one. Unfortunately, we may have to put off the cruise we have scheduled for February because of work conflicts. Hopefully we can plan one later in the spring.

Please post any questions, and I will try to get to them soon.

So was there any listing of the ship as others have stated? Or did you even notice a difference other than you werent' moving.

The only difference was we were tilted to one side. It made eating soup difficult that night at dinner! :)

Live from the Fantasy

We went up to the Putt Putt at 2:00 where there was supposed to be a meet and greet, but only one other person was there so that M & G was very disappointing. We had a pretty good roll call group, but most had met in NOLA on Sunday night.

There were about 7 or 8 of us up there until about 2:30.. it got too windy so we kind of called it off. Sorry we missed you :(
